Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) That's the issue I'm having with my CD ROM.. I can't even put my system restore disk in to restore the system back to when my computer was seeing better days.

I have had my ET 1161-01 for 3 months and now have the same issue. the DVD/Cd Driver is corrupt and uninstalling it and rebooting does not fix it and Emachines gives me nothing but the run around on trying to fix it and best Buy wants to charge me to fix it. very frustrating.

Do you know how to get to the Device Manager on the control panel? (Start, control panel, system and device manager on Vista, similar on XP.) Go down to the list to CD/DVD drives, and left click on the plus sign next to it. Then right click on the CD drive you are having trouble with, and select "uninstall" and OK when it asks if you are sure. Then reboot your computer. Windows will reinstall the correct driver, which will likely fix your problem.

You have one of two problems....

1 - The driver for the cdrom drive has become corrupted somehow and needs replacing. Go out to the ACER website and download the cdrom driver specific to your make and model of computer (it is IMPORTANT that you provide specific information in the window boxes to get the correct driver for your hardware.) Once you have the new driver, uninstall the device from within Device Manager. Reboot the computer and when Windows proclaims it has found a new device, select to install the device driver from a specific location. Browse to the folder where you expanded the drivers and let Windows install and update the drivers from that location. OR the other possibility is....

2 - Your cdrom drive has died. Remedy, have it replaced.

Error 39 canot load the driver

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Uninstall and reinstall the driver

Uninstall the driver from Device Manager, and then scan for new hardware to install the driver again.

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.
  1. On the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Follow the instructions.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Open Device Manager, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes. Follow the instructions.
