Question about Brother Multi-Function Center MFC-240C All-In-One InkJet Printer

I have a Brother MFC-240C printer which I have been fooling with all day.  It will not work.  The screen said I was out of yellow ink.  I replaced it with an unused cartridge which was about 6 months old.  Then the screen said there was no cartridge in it, so I tried again after going out to get a new cartridge, but that made no difference.  It says there is no cartridge  in it and does not recognize that the door to the cartridge section is closed.   What can I do to get this thing to work?  It is not that old.  I don't remember dates, but I think it is less than 2 years old and has not had a great deal of use.

Hi chrcko

Many times if the cartridge isn't the name brand, it won't be recognized, so first of all is it an off-brand or a name brand?

Second thing to check is the metal contacts between the cartridge and the printer, if these are dirty, then it won't work, just clean with a soft clean cloth and it should be fine.

If this too fails, then I would next suggest, turning the printer off, disconnecting it, uninstalling it and in reverse order reinstall it and see if it works. If it still won't work let me know.

Welcome to Fixya! Try Cleaning the Contact where the Cartridge inserts and Meets the Printer. Use a Q-tip and Alcohol. Then Uninstall and Reinstall your Software if Possible.

Clean the print heads and then make sure the drivers you installed recognize all of the ink cartridges ar their proper ink levels. Replace ink if necessary.

I have a year0-old Brother MFC-250C which worked very well -- even after I upgraded to Windows 7. But... when I replace ink cartridges, they don't print. I'm now down to blue and yellow...


yup,,, that is some problem with win.7,,, you try using this printer with win.xp,, it will work fine,,, your printer will miss printing line,, rest will work fine

MFC-240C no red when prink out


You may need a new printhead, You get a 1 year warranty with Brother, if it's older than a year, you can buy a new mfc 490 for around $120.00, the printhead will cost more than that to replace and only have a 30 day warranty.

HELP ON MFC-240C


IssueAn 0xc18xxxxx or 0xc19xxxxx ink system error code displays on the front panel. The printer cannot copy, receive faxes, or print. Solution
Press the On button to turn the printer off. 
Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
Remove all the ink cartridges.
Wait two minutes.
Plug the power cord into the back of the printer.
Press the On button to turn the printer on. 
Install the ink cartridges when prompted.
If the error code does not display, the issue is resolved.
If the 0xc18xxxxx or 0xc19xxxxx ink system error code displays on the front panel, service the printer.

Problem with Ink Cartridge


If you only want to print in b/w and do not use the color ones there is a workaround.

Please notice that you will destroy the C/Y/M part of the print head because the ph needs the ink to prevent a dryout!!!

Simply stick some adhesive tape around the window in the middle between the ink-outlet and the valve. The flag inside signals the printer the inklevel (and also the cartridge being installed).

did you replace with brother carts, are you sure machine is refering to mag and yellew being mt, not the other ones, power off, remove all carts, power on , reinsert carts one at a time answer machine when prompted. these cartridges are deemed empty even when they look like they have a little ink left. Try putting in 4 new brother inks
