Start relay was broken on KSCS25FJSS01

Hi, I have KitchenAid, side by side refrigerator model KSCS25FJSS01. Bought new in January 2001. It's been great until 2 days ago. Both compartments were warm. I could hear the fan but not the compressor. I pulled the start relay out and I could tell the parts inside were broken by barely shaking it. I bought a new one from FSP and installed it. So far so good after about 3 hours. When is it safe to assume it was just the relay and not also the conpressor? Does the relay break because the compressor is going bad or just a weak part of the design? I would hate to put food back in it just to have to pull it out in a day or two. Appreciate your help. Thank you.

after 10 hours. Temperature was 0 and 37 degrees within 2.5 hours. Thanks again.

Similar problem. What is the part number for the start relay and is there a tutorial or good diagram of where this is and how to get to it?

    Thanks!

You can put your food back in. The PTC relay as they are called go out from prolonged use. Opening door excessively accidentally leaving door open dirty coils under the fridge and iced up coils. Alot of things can cause these to go out prematurely. Hopes this helps ken

Definetly sounds as if your overload relay was indeed bad, and yes there can be miltiple problems to cause it to happen, the fact that you used nad exact part and it started with no hesitaion I would not have a concern, I would however checkthe condensor coil under refrig and vacuum it very well, the easier it breathes the less chance of overheating

I just replaced the start relay (start device) on our KitchenAid side by side refrigerator. The new relay I received was exactly like the original except it did not come with the plug in capacitor. I...

Leave the capacitor on and don't worry about the cover. The capacitor really helps the compressor to not use as much electricity, thus saving energy.

Freezer and fridge is warm

Sounds like the motor start relay and capacitor both need to be changed. The clicking is the overload cutting off power to compressor because it will not start. It will need a better start capacitor also to get it going again. Keep it unplugged until the parts can be tested and replaced. If not the internal overload may be damaged. How to remove and replace a start relay on KSCS25FJSS01

Ok, give it a go. Some compressor covers have a shiny metal strip which keeps the plastic cover in place. This is unclipped simply with a small flathead screwdriver inserted to either side between the clip and the cover. Other covers have a slot on either side of the cover and again a small flat screwdriver inserted into the slot and a bit of pressure to one side to lever the latch lock away from the metal housing of the compressor. With a bit of jiggling either way you should be able to get the cover off without damaging it. From here on I would recommend you take a snapshot with your cellphone or camera so that it is easy to rewire the replacement. Take your sample down to any refrigeration spares shop and buy a replacement and fit. Simple as that.
