Question about Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 Web Camera

5 Answers

Please check that your camera is not currently in use......

I bough a VX-3000 lifecam and installed it on my lap top. It gave me the set up wizard to check and make sure the video, and audio were working. I decided to see if it worked and hopped onto my windows live messenger. I went to invite a friend but I recieved this message in bold print... :

"We couldn't start your camera device. Please check that your camera is not currently in use by another program, and then try again"

I've tried everything. I've deleted the software over three times and tried to reinstall it.... I even restarted my computer after I installed it and tried it again... Please, any input would be vastly appreciated!

Whenever I try to go to "Tools"--> "Audo and Video Setting" it says "Set-up" rather than "Setting" firstly, secondly it says "We are unable to run Audio and Video set-up"

My Web-Cam and Mic are installed onto my labtop, and inside it. So There is no way for me to unplug, plug-in again.

    HELP!!!

I have a built in web cam on new laptop, it worked fine on MSN to do video/webcam. But now, for some unknown reason I get this mesage:

We couldn't start your camera device. Please check that your camera is not currently in use by another program, and then try again.

  • vickyphillip Mar 05, 2009

I have read the solution...but when I try that it says 'unable to run audio and video set up' and I can only then click OK.

Please help, as my mum lives abroad and we like to communicate on MSN video

  • vickyphillip Mar 05, 2009

I am thinking it is either a new typr of messenger live or because I just installed Mcafee?

  • Anonymous Mar 06, 2009

Exactly the same problem, but I don't think it's the web cam as it seems to be happening with lots of different ones. I think it's messenger, but will let you know if I find out a fix.

  • annio513 Mar 17, 2009

My camera worked fine until I had to update to WLM 2009. Now it's contuously screwing up. The only solution has been to unistall WLM and my camera and install them both again. This usually works for about 2 days then it's gone again. Sometimes it's just my sound that is gone, or I can't see my camera from my side, and other times nothing works like there is no camera installed. When i go into the audio video settings in WLM all of the tests work fine......still no camera. Like most updates, they send them out before they are ready. I have Microsoft LifeCam VX-5000. All the people i talk to with cameras of various brands are all having the same issues.

I have the exact same problem!

"We couldn't start your camera device. Please check that your camera is not currently in use by another program, and then try again."

    Well, that's useful isn't it?

I saw somewhere else that the only thing you could possibly try is to uninstall the webcam, then install it again, good luck, I'm still yet to try it out!

i'm really getting annoyed by what is happening to my laptop.. anyway, my os is XP and my Acer is 5570..before, i wasn't experiencing any problem with my orbicam until the other day... it kept saying that another application might be using it but (as far as i know) there is no application open and i can't think of another application that might use it... the thing that pisses me off is that it reconnects by itself and then the beeping sound is continuous(like the sound when a flash drive is found and then removed... and that's for many times.!) I've tried to look for forums to help mw with this problem but as for now there is still no reply from them.. back to what i was explaining, there is another pop up window and in the title bar it says that "Sign in with Windows Live ID." I never get those before so now i'm wondering if this is done by a malware or something.. please help me.! i'm begging.! i don't know what to do when it comes to something like this...

Normal 0 Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.

Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.

A. Skype Setup:

After downloading and installing Skype set it up as follows:

  1. Go to TOOLS, then OPTIONS, and click on Audio Settings and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  2. Then click on the Video Settings.
  3. The camera if installed properly will come up and show a picture.
  4. Then on the bottom of the page click on Save.

The camera and audio should function properly. Your friends and Family will now see and talk to you.

B. Yahoo Setup:

After downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger set it up as follows:

  1. Go to Messenger at the top left and click on it.
  2. Next go down to Preferences and click on it.
  3. Next Calling and Devices on the right and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  4. Next go to the Test Audio section and (in blue writing) click on “Open the call setup assistant” and follow the instructions on the left window.

C. Windows Live Messenger:

  1. After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
  2. Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on “ “Show Menus.” And then click on “Show the Menu Bar”.
  3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
  4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
NOTE: You audio and video should work. Enjoy.

When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.
Hope this helps. Bud

I had the same problem. It turned out to be caused by the new McAfee anti virus programme I had installed. I rang McAfee and they sorted it straight away.
