Replaced Motorguide Trolling motor switch ... same problem

Transom mount MotorGuide 12v runs slow on 1st and 2nd forward selected speeds, 0 3rd and 4th speeds and runs High at 5th speed selected. Both reverse speeds work properly. Replaced original switch with factory replacement, Runs the same. During changing switches, moved one wire at a time, so I wouldn't mix up connectors to posts. Can't find wiring diagram online to verify if I rewired new switch wrong...but this didn't fix the problem... ??? Can You help

Had the same problem with mine lost 3 and 4 speeds eventually lost all speed except 5. Took lower unit apart and cleaned brushes and armature little tricky getting back together you have to get the brushes back up over the armature. for unit to go back together. Once together had all the speeds working again.

The first thing to check,(After making SURE the electricity is disconnected to the trolling-motor) remove the propeller and see if the shear-pin (Usually made of brass) in in place and not sheared/broken.
If it is, your local marine shop should be able to provide a new one. I always carry spares. If the pin is OK, the windings may have an electrical fault that would require a factory-repair.

My trolling motor stopped working suddenly. It is a 96 motorguide 56. It is completely charged. What else do I check. I check 5 fuses by the battery as well.

First you need to check to see if power is getting to the motor. If power is not getting to the motor, then check the battery. If you are getting power to the motor, then troubleshoot starting with checking to see if power is getting to the foot pedal. From there check the switches, and make sure they all have power. If they do, then most likely it is the brushes which could be worn on the powerhead itself.

Hey Chris,, you are starting a project (or wanting to) that is going to be problematic... It will be easier to go buy a new trolling motor with the money you are going to spend attempting this conversion... the newer trolling motors are so much more efficient...

I have a motorguide trolling motor and the front

With the top off take the six screws out and lift the cable and gear out. Next put your foot pedal at mid position. Then make sure the motor is pointed forward and reinstall the slider gear and the six screws. Last put the top on and make sure the arrow indicator is pointing forward and thats it.
