And to think, you haven't had it long enough to screw it up :-)

I don't know what account name domain name pages are.
Take the unit out of the box, plug it in, connect your computer to one of the 4 LAN ports, and set your computer's IP address to with a subnet mask of The rest doesn't matter.. Now open up IE and type in the address bar.

Mine opens up a pop-up box that says Connect to with the text that the server at WGR 614r7 requires a username and password. Here's where you use admin (always) and password (which you'll get to change).

If the above sequence doesn't work, look at the back of the router where the 5 jacks are. Between the jacks and the antenna, I have 32 holes, 31 of them are square and one is ROUND! There's your reset button. Press and hold it for about 20 seconds.

Now repeat the above steps from the top.

I put my account name and password but still i cannot configure the router

go to on any browser

enter admin for the username
and leave the password field blank

from here you can set up the wireless, configure anything you need to respec, I belive that D-Link comes with a wizard for wireless connections so that you do not have to manually set up the connection.

We are trying to secure the wireless router. On the install disk it asks for the internet account name and password. Our internet provider states we do not have a name or password for the system and that...

ok you need to open your internet browser and in the address bar enter then a login prompt will come up enter admin for the user name and leave the password blank. then when you get to the router configuration page select the setup wizard and follow it to the end and that should be it, if you still have problems uninstall the setup that you did from disk they may confict. ok hope that helps and just in case you dont have the manual here is the link to the support page for your router please let me know if i can assist you any further and how you go.

Forgot password

To ilysurita, cj_mom, top_shutta…
First can I clarify what is meant by a ‘lost password’ …. The original poster here is asking about the password needed to login to the router configuration pages.

If you know the password to login to the router configuration pages, you can still get access to the network key (also known as passphrase, WPA or WEP key, PSK, pre-shared key) – which is the key Windows asks for to connect a new computer to the network. It will be found under a heading like ‘Wireless Security’ or ‘Wireless Settings’ within the router configuration pages. For this model, you can find the router configuration pages by typing (or .com) into a web browser, or

If you don’t know the username/password to login to your router, try using the defaults – for this model, they are admin and password.

However, if the router login username/password has been forgotten, the only way to regain access to the router configuration settings is to reset the router, as described in my posting above. I don’t know of any shortcuts to this one. :(

If you have to resort to this, you might want to wait for whoever set up the router to help with this. This is because resetting the router will remove all your settings – password, network key, ISP connection info – so you will lose your internet connection altogether until it is set up again.

On the other hand, if you’re willing to spend some time and patience, you can have a go yourself.

If you have your original setup CD this may contain a software wizard to walk you through it. If not, you might be able to download a setup wizard from the router manufacturer’s website, along with a quick installation guide (and a manual).

The Netgear site also has very clear troubleshooting and support pages which will help with setup, even if you don’t have any setup software:

Make sure you use a wired connection. Also, print off all the information you need before you begin, as you will not be able to access the internet while you are setting up the router.
Good luck whatever you decide to do
