Question about Konica Minolta bizhub C351 All-In-One Laser Printer

Bizhub C351 Magenta Image Unit Problem

Hello, I have a magenta image unit (Bizhub C351) that keeps going bad within 10% usage. 3 units in a row (2 sent back, warrenty).  I'm beginning to think there is no way I can have 3 in a row "clogged". Streaks very bad just like a image unit does when it goes. I put a new one in and it's fine for a few thousand prints and then goes bad. These OEM units have a life of 10 times longer. Machine has been cleaned and LED's etc.  Just the Magenta does this. HELP anyone. Mcmurphi

I also have installed new magenta toner with same results...streaks and now red.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

    Streaks and NO red. Sorry.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

A unclean laser beam light? Where is it and how accessed in the 351?

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

The room where the printer is, is at a constant 70 degrees.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

Chapli, good idea about cleaning. It was cleaned 3 months ago and the rep said it was a bad image unit. I'm sure it was fine. Another rep is coming tomorrow so I thought before he came I might be able to fix this and save some $$$$$.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

Kevin000, I checked that doc earlier today and could find nothing about and image unit prematurely quiting.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

mright, cleaning the unit is probably going to happen.....again. Unless the first tech missed something I'm not sure if that is going to solve this. Because when a brand new IU goes in, it's fine, prints beautifully for 3-4 thousand prints. That's what baffles me.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

Askmee, I'm using the same paper as always. Buy it directly from the wholesaler and store at room temp (70) always. Why do think it could be the paper?

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

It appears the experts here seem to think that cleaning is what is wrong.....I hope so.  Just some things don't add up:  Cleaned 3 months ago, New IU works great for a few weeks then goes bad.  Last tech narrowed down to bad IU.  Three IU in a row just can't happen in my opinion.  Why don't the other colored IU's react the same?

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

Sam88kid, Change the magenta image unit (part no.4047-603)? I've changed the IU itself are you suggesting it has a separate waste part?

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

Put a magnetized screwdriver in the waste toner box? What?

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

    IU is the right one.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

I will check the tube from the IU to see if it is clogged with toner...thanks.

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

adjusting pigment on halftones etc .......what?

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

magnetized screwdriver idea sounds like I break something to fix something??

  • mcmurphi Jan 14, 2009

If the tube from the toner to the IU is plugged....How do I get to it to see if that might be the problem....I believe w/o error messages it might be.

  • mcmurphi Jan 15, 2009

Ok, the toner to the IU is not clogged, in fact there is no tube but gears.
I stuffed a pc of paper in the door mechanism so the machine thought the door was closed. Pulled the magenta toner out and no error message came up about the toner. Apparently the toner is being drained out of the IU and not being replaced by the toner cartridge. That answers why the IU is going bad, working for 3000 prints or so and just stopping laying down any M toner. Any ideas here as to how I can get this fixed?

  • mcmurphi Jan 15, 2009

It's not the laser beam, or cleaning.

  • mcmurphi Jan 15, 2009

I don't believe there is a fill tube on the Bizhub 351 just gears.

  • mcmurphi Jan 15, 2009

rylee_smith, those are good possible solutions but again, when a new IU goes in the problem is solved but when the toner is gone from the IU it starts acting up. The toner from the cartridge is not getting there for some reason. Again, I stuffed a pc of paper in the door mechanism to make it think the door was shut. Pulled out the magenta toner and no error message popped up about the toner. It acted like it was there.

  • mcmurphi Jan 15, 2009

Bubbabear64 the copier count is around 150 M. Replace the developer?
    What does that mean? Thanks.

  • mcmurphi Jan 15, 2009

If the developer is Low, why wouldn't the manual for the Bizhub 351 mention it, or even as a consumable product for the machine?

  • mcmurphi Jan 15, 2009

Print head assembly failed? What does that have to do with getting the M toner to the image unit?

  • engmzaki Feb 09, 2009

    hi

we i have the same problem at work, The KonicaMinolta Technical Support checked everything and cleaned all the internal parts and we changed the IU with new one after 15-17% of usage of new unit it give the same problem and the tech, guy informed me that the central bank have the same problem.

Ensure also that the fuser is heating properly, otherwise the magenta toner may not be properly distributed.

Whats the copy count at on your copier? If it's too high you might want to consider replacing the developer for the magenta.

Every color in your copier has a developer unit as well as a toner unit. If the developer is low it will cause the copier to use more toner causing your dilema. 150,000 would be a good time to replace the developer unit on your unit.

Its an item that is replaced by a service technician. It's covered in the service manual covers it because has to be calibrated before use. This is done in service mode.

Check with your suplier to inquire about it.

  • Tim Babcock
    Tim Babcock Jan 15, 2009

You might want to look in the Preventative Maintenance section of your manual. It may talk about developer replacement in there. As an authorized Konica/Minolta technician, you need to have developers looked at within that particular cycle count and replaced as needed.

Normal 0 Did you install the software with the camera connected to the computer? Disconnect the camera from the USB port and reinstall the software. When the program asks you to connect the camera, do so, and it should work. Hope this is of some help. Bud

Below is info for setting up Audio & Video to chat on line after you install , either Skype or a messenger program.

Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.

Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.

A. Skype Setup:

After downloading and installing Skype set it up as follows:

  1. Go to TOOLS, then OPTIONS, and click on Audio Settings and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  2. Then click on the Video Settings.
  3. The camera if installed properly will come up and show a picture.
  4. Then on the bottom of the page click on Save.

The camera and audio should function properly. Your friends and Family will now see and talk to you.

B. Yahoo Setup:

After downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger set it up as follows:

  1. Go to Messenger at the top left and click on it.
  2. Next go down to Preferences and click on it.
  3. Next Calling and Devices on the right and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  4. Next go to the Test Audio section and (in blue writing) click on “Open the call setup assistant” and follow the instructions on the left window.

C. Windows Live Messenger:

  1. After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
  2. Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on “ “Show Menus.” And then click on “Show the Menu Bar”.
  3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
  4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
NOTE: You audio and video shoud work. Enjoy.

When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.
Hope this helps. Bud

Hi!
Streaks can be caused by a number of things like-
The fuser
The ETB
The toner cartridge
The firmware
The printer needs a cleaning.
The slot in the printer.
Incorrect Media.

Try cleaning the printer, use a lint-free cloth for the ETB, DO NOT touch the belt with your fingers, the oil from fingers will often make things worse.
Always use a lint-free cloth, if you ever encounter dirt inside the printer, dampen the cloth.

    Calibrate the printer.
From the printer's control panel menu
Configure Device-> Print Quality-> Calibrate now.
(Press the Checkmark key to advance through menus)

  • Rylee Smith
    Rylee Smith Jan 14, 2009

Perform a print stop test, this will determine if the fuser or the etb may be causing this issue
1.send a job to the printer
    2. When the printer takes the sheet of paper, wait approx 9-11 seconds then open the top door on the printer, and pull down the ETB. Look for the sheet of paper, if it is on the ETB and the job is partially formed, with streaks on it, The ETB may be responsible. The key idea here is to try and catch the sheet of paper before it goes through the fuser, and is therfore not completely fused

The problem is solved as well by providing a method for controlling the differen- tial gloss of in a low density image produced with pigmented toners using the steps selecting a first halftone image having a first anisotropic structure, selecting a second halftone having a second structure orientation different from that of the first halftone, applying the first halftone to at least some portion of the halftone image and applying the second halftone to another portion of the halftone image characterized in that substantially colorless toner is added to the pigmented toner structures so that the total area coverage of pigmented plus substantially unpig- mented toners is in the range of 20% to 80%, more preferable in the range 30% to 70% and most preferable in the range 40 to 60%. Alternatively the concentration of pigment in the toner is reduced so that the total area coverage of the toner is in the range 30% to 70%. For this alternative solution all improvements and modifications are valid as well.

Check the fill tube from the toner cartridge to the image unit. It may have become plugged with toner. If there is also an error code going along with it shutting the machine of and on will not reset it. Turn on the machine, wait till the code appears. Open the front door and close it. This should reset the code.

open right hand side door and remove 1 screw from a silver bracket
front end of the machine and 1 from a silver bracket from the rear side
of the machine, the brackets should pop out about 10cm.

Then open the left side door and remove the collection bottle which is your waste toner box

  • machadojr_fe Jan 14, 2009

A toner fill tube device is attached to the toner fixture having a
vertical fill tube and a rotatable auger to feeding toner. The toner anti-dribble device includes a sleeve member
which engages with the fill tube.I would check both to see if they are clogged or otherwise damaged.

Make sure the power is off and printer is disconnected.
Then put a magnitized screwdriver in the waste toner box
If there is metal when you take it out, the the high voltage power has failed.
Call a technician as the Printed Circuit Board has broken.

Replacing this will be a fraction of a new printer,

please post results

Very likely the waste in the image unit is full and over flowing before end of life. If there has been a lot of printing done using the magenta toner, the waste would be more than usual. Change the magenta image unit (part no.4047-603).

As this problem cannot be cleared without getting the printer opened.and its not possible without ant technical knowledge and proper tools.i think waiting for the rep is a better choice as he will clean the unit if its dirty.but if any parts gets cracked in opening the printer then it will be costly issue.as 1 thing you can try.just remove all the tonner catridge from the printer.and apply air blower in the printer for 15 minutes.as all the dust will get cleared with that.and then check.but take care of delicate parts while blowing air it may get damaged due to pressure of air.

As it happens because the waste toner powder gets collected on the lens of the printer so it cannot read the printouts perfectly.the only solution for this is to get the unit serviced at a proper service center,as your old cartridge which you thought was faulty and replaced it with new was also proper.just get your unit/printer serviced.to avoid further damage.the lens gets weak if used in same condition further for some months.and then only replacement is the other option.as this is just the starting of the problem so cleaning/servicing may help at present.
thanks,.

There is a long process to solve the problem I might suggest that you have to call for service. It might be the magenta developer unit might be bad or rich the max life that need to be replace. Or just plain adjustment on colors setting. It might need to update the firmware to the newest level.
