Question about Dayton E51 Oil Filled Utility Heater

Heater starts up but quits after 20 seconds?

I have put in a new igniter, clean fuel and cleaned fuel filter.

What is the air pressure set at.very important it is set exactly or the unit will not work properly.need to have a pressure gauge to set the pressure....

It sure sounds like a failure during pre-ignition. Page 5 covers both of your burn times with two different Flow charts.
A yellowish flame can mean a warped flame ring or incorrect air flow.

Fuel filter replacement 7.3 liter diesel


I'm not too uppety-up on diesels but I have changed a few. My description is pretty basic.
BEFORE doing anything, make sure you have at least a quart (or more) of FRESH CLEAN diesel in separate container.
Locating the filter is usually in site when opening hood and fairly easy to get to. The ones I've done, look simular to a spin on oil filter. Usually there is a valve on the bottom to drain fuel and/or water out out of the filter.
First, drain fuel out of filter,may need a hose and a catch pan so is not to make too much of a mess.
Second, spin old filter off.
Third, take your fresh clean diesel and pour it in the new filter up to being full but not running over, make sure you wet the o-ring with clean diesel also.
Fourth, spin new filter in place.
Fifth, turn ignition key to on for at least 10 seconds or more, NOT starting the engine. You should hear a pulsing sound, that's the pump priming the new filter, can't have any trapped air in system. If there is too much trapped air the engined will not start or stay running. Heater will not start


Does the blower motor start when you plug it in/turn it on? It may take around 5 seconds if your heater has a HSI(hot surface igniter). If it does you need to check the igniter and the fuel flow. Either way, remove the top of the heater. You will be able to see the fan, igniter, and fuel nozzle. Turn the fan by hand to see if it turns freely. If it does, watch out for the fan and turn the heater on. Look for the igniter to start sparking (spark plug type) or glowing (HSI type). Next, use a flashlight to look for fuel spraying from the nozzle. If fuel isn't spraying, try cleaning the fuel nozzle and check the fuel filter. Watch out for the HSI, if you have one, they are very brittle and easily broken. If you still don't have fuel flow after cleaning the nozzle and the fuel filter, you may have an air pressure problem. 125btu reddy heater, somene mixed some gas in the heater and now it won't ignite. how to fix??


Drain it clean it out real good clean out the fuel system end to end. From the line in to the tank thru the filter and so on remove the nozzle clean the screen and nozzle put it all back together. with the top section removed try to start the heater. You should have a fine mist of fuel and spark if it lights shut it down and clean the photo electric eye with a soft cloth and windex. make sure the igniter is clean and close to the fuel mist for ignition, put the top on and turn on your heater.

Is this a propane or kerosene heater? If it is kerosene, check your fuel, clean your tank and start with fresh fuel. Check your fuel filter/air filters at the back of air pump. Make sure your ignition system is working.

  1. Does the ignitor glow for 5 seconds when the unit is started?
  2. What is the air pump pressure reading?
These are the starting points for troubleshooting a heater that has an ingntor.

How long has it been since you last had it cleaned. There may be soot build up in it, including the burner pot keeping it from igniting. When was it last working properly?

30,000 btu kerosene ready heater


check pressure of the air compressor should be in the 3.0 to 3.5 range. not enough won't suck fuel, too much will blow out the flame. igniter either lights or it doesn't no in between. does the main flame come on?
