I upgraded my Ram to 4 new 1gb but does NOT open windows

I put in 4 new PNY 1GB DDR2 800 Mhz PC6400, initially it worked but when I switched it off it won't open windows (vista), when I put the old ram back it started working again, I researched the ram thoroughly and made sure its' compatible as I am no genius, I had never expected this to be too complicated.

It could be that one of the new sticks is bad. Try replacing the old RAM one by one with the new RAM until you find the one that is causing the problem. Hope this helps.

It is possible that one or more sticks are bad. Try them each one at a time and see if it works. If it boots with one, then shutdown and put in another until it doesn't boot. Once it doesn't boot, remove the one you just put in again and test the others as well. Oh and please take a moment to give this solution a fixya rating. Thanks! :c)

I recently purchased Two PNY 1Gb ram to upgrade from original 512mb. When I put both 1Gb ram in the slots, the computer will not boot up. When I take one out and put the original 512 back in with the other...

I don't know your specific model, but some of the Emachines had some memory directly on the motherboard. With the 1Gb and 512Mb sticks installed, boot the machine and report how much memory the system sees. Perhaps the onboard memory is causing you to exceed the 2Gb limit.

Please post the memory size you get here with the above sticks.

Thanks,
Dan

I want to add 4GB of DDR3 memory, what further info to I need to know about the memory?

Newegg has a great site to find the correct and most compatible memory for you Here.
To maximize your ram speed, use the same speed and types of ram

For example, if you have a 1GB right now, add three more 1GB than putting in a 2GB and 1GB.
If you have a 4GB ram stick right now, add another 4GB and not 2x2GB. Also make sure the MHz on the ram is the same, (1333, 1600, 2000)

Enjoy upgrading your computer!

Windows xp sp3 maximum amount of memory

HI,
Of course it can be done, your computer can take up to 2BG of ram (memory) and the slots are located inside the computer tower like this >>>>>

Your motherboard will have 2 slots like in the picture and will take 2 x 1BG (1GB in each slot), just make sure you buy the correct speed and type memory so it's a good idea to take your memory with you when you buy is so there is no mistakes.

Good luck

Upgrade Ram - what do I buy?

This is what the spec says. - DDR2 667 MHz SDRAM, 2 x SODIMM socket for expansion up to 2GB SDRAM

If your computer currently have 1GB of RAM. Its high possible there is 2 sticks of 512mb in there right now. so you will need to get 2 1GB memory since you will need to take out both of those sticks to put in these 2. There is only 2 slots.

Dell 8400 new memory

If you are using Windows XP, go into your control panel, double click System (from classic view), and look towards the bottom where it says "Processor x.xx GHz, x.xx GB of RAM" and make sure your 2.00 GB of RAM is recognized by Windows. Next I would make sure you are using 400- or 533-MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM. If you are, try removing one of the two modules and see if the computer runs smoothly. If it does, I would install a different brand of memory.
