Is it possible to use the HP J5780 scanner when it is hooked up via a print server? When I go to scan I get "An error occured with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again." Is there not somewhere where you can enter the IP to enable this?

Re: HP J5780 - Using scanner with print server
Yes. this printer can be use for wirelss connection, so it can be use with wired jetdirect. however, you are going to need the web jetadmin from hp in order to reconfigure the IP address for the jetdirect.
you can download a copy form HP.com

There is a device called a Pocket Pro that attaches to the machine and you can then hook it via a RJ45 connection. I believe Troy makes that device. I have used it several times with success. Its basically a print server device.
To get the scanner working this is what you should do. First, do not install the software for Officejet All-in-one J5780. Instead of this, install HP Officejet All-in-one J5700, you can get it from the HP website. I do not know why but this software makes the scanner work. You can then install J5780 which will delete some of the old files but will keep the scan file on.
Kindly install the scanner software for printer the driver software cd just re install it will install the scanner software and make sure in device manger there is not other usb device listed if it is there just remove it. And refresh it in will automatically install the driver.
It has to be an option you received with your scanner..not all scanners are equal. If you can find the documentation on the manufacturers website it will tell you if you have this feature..good luck...
Hi, The all in one solution software you used in XP doesn't work fully with Vista.
But you can still scan and copy by using Windows Photo Gallery.
1. Click on files tab at the top in Window Photo Gallery.
2. Click on import from camera or scanner.
3. Highlight your scanner icon (ie HP J5780) then click import.
4. New scan window will popup, now you can preview or scan using this basic looking Vista utility.
What you are saying will not work . The J5780 only connects with a USB. It does not have a J45 connection. So to play with the "built in network server" would do nothing. You would have to have some way to convert the USB to a J45 so he could hook it to his Wireless Router. His only alternative is to hook it to another computer that is used as a Wireless Slave that is shared or to get a print server. Hower, Belkin does make a wireless USB Hub that converts 5 USB's to J45 and can be hooked to you Wireless Router. It also has a built in Print Server. You can take this device and instead of hooking it J45 to the Router you can hook it to a linksys Bridge and now the USB HUB from Belkin becomes completely wireless. And has a Print server to boot! The model number are Belkin "Network USB Hub" and the Linksys WET54G. Since the Hub connects to the USB devices and then converts them to a J45, to link to a network you can hook it to the llinksys device and convert it to a wireless network usb hub. It also has a print server built in. It works. I own the same printer all in one and if you search on the internet you can pick up both devices on the cheap.
hmmm...well..that's an interesting point..according to HP site, this is NOT supposed to be an issue. Seems, though, that perhaps, the print server/hub you are using, is not processing the scan command? I'd check that item first, to see if it will handle those commands..
