Re: wireless printer

Sounds like you have lost your network. Have you recently installed a new anitvirus of firewall? Share a file folder on your Xp desktop machine. See if you can access it from your laptop. There are several ways this can happen. Let me know if you can see the shared folder and what antivirus or firewall you are running. Ed

Re: wireless printer

It sounds as if the printer may not be set as the default printer, so check in the installed printers and check and also check that the printer you are sending the print to is the setup one and not a pdf or microsoft office document printer, this is found on the drop down box when the print option appears. i am also assuming that the printer has worked before from vista to an xp machine as sometimes xp needs a small update to be used with a vista pc on the network

You don't have to excuse yourself - we all started at some point.

The main problem with your setup is that your desktop has to be on in order to print from the laptop.
What you in general have to do is to '''share" the printer with your laptop.

I will assume that you are running Windows (XP or Vista) on both of your computers.
  1. Go to Start -> Printers (on your desktop computer!)
  2. Look for the printer you want to share.
  3. Right-click on the printer icon and choose "Properties"
  4. Go to the "Sharing" tab.
  5. Select "Share this printer"
If your laptop is running Windows 95.98.Me, or 2000, you have to install "Additional Drivers".

This is a very general description. If this doesn't work or you need more details, come back here and leave a comment with the following details:
  1. What is make and model of your printer?
  2. Which Operating system is installed on your desktop and on your laptop?
I will be able to be more specific, if I know what we are dealing with and maybe there is a better solution possible. Maybe the above mentioned steps are working for you, in which case I wish you "Happy printing!"

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

unless this is a wireless enabled or lan RJ45 connectable printer you cannot, the pc that the printer is connected to must be on at the time of the printing.

Wireless printers have their own arial and allocated ip address, Lan RJ45 connective printers can be connected to the router.

Lan Network Problems

Hello: What I would say is: go to microsoft update and make sure you have all the updates for your OS.

Then; read the posting (below) from someone who had the same issue:
stacemarie wrote: "XP SP 3 updates some networking sharing system LAN files that cause some configurations to become unaccessable on the workgrouped networks. We cannot - even ping - the network addresses after installing - so it was an uninstall and do a system restore to get to the original good working state of the clients.

Microsoft needs to come up with a patch to fix this as we are seeing more and more networked clients having these connection and sharing problems."
Do you understand the above?

Let me know if you do not know how to unistall SP3 and do a Restore...

Wireless connection to internet

I just got it all working [new notebook running Vista], connecting to the net via the telkom 5102G - with a PC running XP connecting via LAN.

The 5102G comes ready configured with a network key / code [stuck on the back] so use that to connect to the router - once you've connected it'll come up with limited connectivity.

I then ran the firmware upgrade from
To do this, download and unpack the thing. In your browser, go to [for the router config] and click on firmware and follow the instructions.

Once this is done - disconnect and reconnect the vista laptop connection. Open your browser and simply click on tools and uncheck the tickbox alongside "work offline".

I know that sounds ridiculous but that's exactly what I did and I'm surfing fine.

Now... just need to share files and printer and we're 100%.

Hope that helps.
