Question about Insignia I-LC23Q1 23 in. HD-Ready LCD Television

1 Answer

Insignia IS-TVHD30 The TV has worked perfectly for a year and a half or so, but a thunderstorm passed the other day, and now it does absolutely nothing......NO lights, NO responses to switches or remote. The TV is plugged into a surge protector strip along with a DVD player, Satellite box, and VCR. Those all appear to be working; at least they have their "ready" lights on. I suspected a fuse, and took the case off the TV and found a line fuse, but it checked good with an ohmeter. There are no burnt smells, and no unsightly capacitors or other components inside. "Girociclo" got me the name and phone number of the company and support, but they just said to send them the TV. Can one of you please help me troubleshoot this myself? Thanks

Im having the same problem with my IS-TVHD30 and would love to see anything that I can test as well. I also checked to make sure I have 120v across the fuse and thats about where my limited knowledge ended. Any help would be appreciated.

My IS-TVHD30 power supply started intermittently giving a high-pitch tone only a few months after purchasing. At the time I didn't know it was the power supply. Eventually the power switch wouldn't turn the set on anymore unless I unplugged it from the wall and plugged it back in. After about 18 months, the set wouldn't come on at all. My attempts to find parts have failed. It doesn't make much sense to spent hundreds to repair this $400 set. I just want to purchase a power supply or find a tech documentation so I can repair this one. I've had other Chinese-made power supplies that burn up capacitors quickly; my guess is that is what is wrong here too. This is annoying given that my last tube television (RCA) worked for 20 years without incident.

Oddly enough, I found an Insignia IS-TVHD30 lying on the side of the road and not knowing it was a cheap HD, picked it up and proceeded to see what had gone wrong with it. When I got it home and plugged it in, it basically did nothing. Upon closer inspection, I could hear it attempting to power up and then failing to over and over again. I took it apart and noticed that one of the capacitors was discolored. When I prodded at it the thing completely fell apart. Once I removed the shorted cap, I plugged the thing back in and the power came back on. The silk-screened identifier for the cap was C359 but since it had basically crumbled to bits, I was unable to determine the size to replace it with.

Figuring this thing might be worth fixing at that point I prodded around the message boards to see if anyone else was having the same problem. Turns out it's quite common but no one has posted a fix for it. So I ordered the service manual and once it came began searching for the replacement part's specifications. Turns out there are 2 C359 capacitors listed in the manual and the descriptions read something like DE0707B221K2K. Not wanting to order factory replacement parts I searched the schematic and found the value listed as 300pf at 1kV. So I went to the local electronics supply house and picked one up for the huge cost of 20 cents American. Once I replaced the part the unit started working well enough without any further repairs.

Your probably having what cable guys call a SNR ( signal to noise ) issue. There's no way to know unless you call your cable provider. The SNR should be 32 and above with zero pre/post errors. In case you want to ask the tech what they are.

Insignia tv-30 inch ---model is-tvhd30 has burned capacitor-c359--need to know the value in mfd's.

If it is in the power supply better check the rest of them. most should all be the same value so you may be able to get the value for the burnt one from that. good luck

Sounds like power supply problem (either poor connections or bad capacitors).sometimes they look deformed or you have to check them with an incircuit capacitor tester.

Try a "hard restart". which simply means unplugging the power cord of the TV, and replugging it after 4 hours have passed. This technique reprograms the electronics, to a certain extent.
You can also visit the manufacturer's website or call their tollfree number for problem solving info.
Hope these suggestions help you out.

I fixed the problem with the "no power on, low clicking noise". The NPN transistor (2SC5931) was shorted. This transistor controls the horizontal hold. The shorting caused the power supply to overload and restart, then recycle. This was the cause of the clicking noise. Unfortunately this transistor was over $50, most likely due to the extinction of CRT's. I did find a replacement transistor 2SC5552, which only cost $2 (but I was able to get it in Mexico). The location of the transistor is located on the left side of the TV (looking from the back). Directly in front of it is the high voltage transformer which powers the CRT (should have a thick red wire). The transistor is attached to a large aluminum heatsink. To remove the transistor you will have to remove the entire electronics assembly to you can easily get to the underside. This was the solution for my TV, but there could be other components damaged.

Insignia HD30 TV

Take a look at D517 in the power supply for faulty solder joints. That's a common component problem in these units. Otherwise, if enough transient voltage got by to do any harm you might want to test the following: V504 = 2sa1668 R523 = 56 Ohm 1w N502 = Tlp421 optocoupler IC D509 = 1n4148 If any of this has you scratching your head it's probably shop time... Hope this helps, let me know... Bill
