Question about Atwood G6A-7 G6A7 Manual Pilot 6 Gallon RV Trailer Water Heater 96110

1 Answer

I have a new Atwood G6A-7 water heater. The pilot lights fine but gas flow, when it turns on, is so strong it will blow the pilot out. Certain times, it sounds and looks like a mini fire ball going

The old unit (same type) fired immediately when placed in the ON postion after lighting the pilot. This unit seems to have a delay of, say, 20 seconds or so. When the gas ignites the woosh sometimes blows out the pilot.

Clean burner tube with proper brush, such as long spring type for bar-b-Q burner tube that are available at most hardware stores, and make sure you have new burner tube aligned properly (straight on) with brass orifice on gas control. Then be sure to adjust air shutter for nice blue flame, with little orange at tip. Do not give so much air that flame roars or jumps off the end of the burner tube. Too many people think more air, less fuel, but actually, when flame roaring and jumping off end of tube, the heat passes through faster and it takes longer to heat the water inside the tank. Like I said, only enough air to have quiet, steady blue flame. If your not giving it enough air, you'll see dark soot on trailer above water heater, which indicates burning too rich, need more air, or perhaps pilot is partially plugged. Pilot flame should also be blue, not yellow/orange. Small air intake hole on side of fitting just before pilot tube can get spider web, or debris in it as well. Use air to blow that out or a piece of wire like a paper-clip to clean inside that hole.

Sounds like it. Before replacing gas control, try removing thermocouple connection at valve and spray electrical cleaner in there and blow out with compressed air after, being careful not to get it in your eyes. If no electrical cleaner, try WD-40 and blow out after. If you twist up a piece of fine steel wool and insert in there as well and try to spin/twist it to clean contact inside may help as well. Blow out goo after and re-install fitting and try again. If that doesn"t work, replace gas control.
P.S. Highly recommend certified experienced tech perform this control valve replacement if necessary.

Make sure flame is good under thermocouple probe so that it gets proper sensing of flame, and if that's o.k., before you change gas control, remove thermocouple fitting where it attaches to gas control and spray wd-40 in the hole and twirl up some steel wool and push it in the hole and twirl it to try and clean the surface inside there as well. Then spray it out with WD-40 once more to flush out shavings etc, and if you have compressed air, blow it out as well. Now re-attach fitting and snug it, then re-try pilot again. If it works, great if not replace gas control. Let me know the results. You do realize that it should be a certified technician who changes that gas control if necessary, correct?

Hi,
There are a couple of things to check....
I am assuming that the gas is LP or Propane....
make sure that the gas valve is for the right gas and not natural gas...
Also, it is possible that the regulator that cuts the pressure from the tanks is bad and that maybe why the original gas valve failed....
If you have the correct gas valve installed, get a gauge and check the pressure of the gas right before the gas valve...it should be somewhere between 8 and 12 inches water column...
If the regulator is not working properly, check that the vent hole in the regulaor is not plugged by a mud wasp nets or something like that...

I have an Atwood Direct Ignition Model G6A-4E 6 Water Heater

I am a RV service tech and that is an old unit. Your control board is bad but with the age of that unit I would strongly suggest replacing the whole water heater, you can shove a pile of money at it and still have an old water heater when for 3 to 500 bucks you can have a new one with a 2 year warranty
