Dell computer wont start up

Hi, my computer was working fine, i plugged something into the USB and restarted my computer, i heard a small bang and the electrical fuse board tripped. I flicked the switch back up on the fuse board, tested the plug which worked and my pc will not power back up! I have changed the fuse on the plug connected to the power box and it still wont work! Have the cpu opened up beside me. Any ideas, im not a computer tech!!! Thanks in advance, Darragh

Hi Guys thanks for your reply!! But, the computer wont turn on at all, i have nothing connected to the PC, everything is out only the power cable connected! It also tripped the electricity, so question is really, if a computer blows for some reason and trips the electricity fuse board! What would be the likely outcome? i.e, fuse? blown motherboard? thats sort of thing!!!

Tough one, but inspect the motherboard for a blown capacitor. You could test the power supply with a simple voltmeter. Not to mention simply seeing anything lit with the case open while powered one. gl

Looks like it may be a problem with something plugged into one or more of your USB ports. Unplug them all and restart your computer. If this fixes the problem, plug them back in one at a time to determine the problem device.

I have a dell computer and printer. We relocated

Greetings,

Does the printer show that it is receiving power?
Can the printer run any self tests?

It is possible that the USB cable is the failure point although I would expect that the port got banged around during the move.

The quickest isolation test is to replace the USB cable.

If that still does not work, then a service call may be an option. One other thought, if your PC has multiple USB ports, try the cable in one of them.

USB electrical shock

Please get the electric rechecked, now if the power supply sounds like it running (Fan Noise ?), any lights on the PC ? no, check the fuse in the mains lead plug leading to the PC,

there is a fuse inside in the power supply but I must advise you to take great care as the capacitors can hold a charge that can cause death for at a couple of days,

My computer turns on but the moniter wont

Hi again
Hit F8 on start-up, you will see a sub menu pop up, choose safe mode and hit enter, if it boots into windows safe mode (don't choose system restore) go into device manager and uninstall the graphics drivers and restart the machine, the machine should now boot up and re-install the graphics drivers itself, it may ask to be restarted again.
Any more problems post back

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Hi with the USB port they often wear and can be tightend by gently prizing up the flat contact strips inside the socket, this requires a fine needle and a steady hand. If this fails just install a PCIMA USB card. the fan could be faulty, if you can use a multimeter then test the contacts and see if you have power to it. Regards mistyman
