You can install any brand 2.5 hard drive in your laptop. You do need to determine if you need a PATA (IDE) drive or a SATA drive. When you remove the drive and the adapter (if it has one) from the back of the hard drive, if it has pins then it is an IDE if it's just a circuit board with two "L" shapes then it is SATA. And yes, a 40 GB with Ubuntu is a good setup; however you can often find higher capacity drives for just a couple of dollars more, so do some comparisons :c) Good luck oh and if you could please come back and rate this solution with a fixya rating since I answered your question, I would really appreciate it.
