Service Manual > HP Support > Compaq Presario R3000 series of Notebook PC > Manuals download page,http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manua... Click on -> HP Pavilion zx5000 Notebook PC, HP Pavilion zv5000 Notebook PC, Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook PC, HP Compaq nx9100 Notebook PC - Maintenance and Service Guide. ALL power removed; AC adapter (Charger), and Battery; turn the laptop over; suggest lay down on a soft static free cloth, on the table you're working on. (Helps prevent scratching the table, and laptop) Look across from the optical drive at the bottom of the laptop. (CD/DVD drive) Visualize the optical drive as being a rectangular unit. It is. There are two Philips head screws to remove from the bottom; then the optical drive will slide out. Looking at the Service Manual, it looks as though there is a rectangular spot on the bottom of the laptop; in the optical drive area; that is smooth. The two screws to remove are on the outside edge of this rectangular smooth spot, and at each corner. Once the optical drive is pulled out, you'll see two small Philips head screws, that if removed will allow access to anything inside the optical drive. Now really, you want to go into BIOS Setup, and in Boot Options, set the first boot device to CDROM. However you indicated no BIOS screen comes up. Was there a problem before installing the new harddrive? DID you follow Anti-Static Precautions before removing/installing the new harddrive? Have you tried connecting an external VGA monitor to the laptop? (Laptop OFF, monitor OFF. Monitor on first, THEN laptop. Now hold the Fn key down, and tap once on the F4 key. Still no? Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F4 key. (The F4 key is the Display Toggle-Over key) Still no? May be something as simple as the Display Lid Switch is stuck. It's up there by the Right Hinge. (According to the Service Manual)

I'll await the other information before going on. (Was there a previous problem before installing new harddrive/ Did you follow Anti-Static Precautions)

My wife took it in to bestbuy when the problem first materialized. They said it was the hard drive. 1.5 Years later, I get home and she tells me what they say. I buy a new drive and the computer is still kaput. I just ran over to best buy to talk to a tech there and he said it sounds like the mother board is bad. What do you think?

  • Bill Luznar Dec 12, 2012

The screen is always black.... just like as if it were off. No response from the cd-rom at all. The power light comes on and fan is on, and the battery charges fine.

  • Bill Luznar Dec 12, 2012

I also tried connecting a monitor to it and tried hitting the fn and f4 keys and got no change in symptoms.

Ah! Apparently I just woke up! Hate to admit it, but B.B. 'tech' is correct. Although a diagnosis should be performed first, and no half-handed conclusion drawn. The HP Pavilion dv2000 series, Pavilion dv6000 series, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's, PLUS the Compaq Presario V3000, and Presario V6000 series; all share a common problem with the graphics chipset cooling. Makes me wonder about the cooling assembly for the Presario R3000 series, and want to take a look. Nope! Uses two cooling fans, two Heatsinks, and two copper Cooling Tubes, IF there is a graphics chip, and not just using Integrated Graphics.

This brings me back to the laptop is dirty inside. To explain let's go back to some basics first; 1) Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C. Integrated Circuit,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_... The I.C., or chipset used for graphics, is the graphics chipset; or more properly known as the G.P.U.,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU The graphics chipset is soldered to the motherboard, with a BGA surface mount. Ball Grid Array. To explain the BGA surface mount, compare to an older Intel Pentium 4 processor, that uses a Socket 478 processor socket,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_478 The bottom of the Processor has 478 contact pins. The processor socket, 478 matching socket holes. With a BGA surface mount, there are no contact pins, nor socket holes. In place of the contact pins are Solder Balls. In place of the socket holes, are Copper Pads on the motherboard. (They are also gold plated) The graphics chipset is set down into place on the motherboard, with the Solder Balls lining up on the Copper Pads. Heat is tehn applied at a specific temperature, and length of time. (It is also applied Evenly) This action melts the Solder Balls, and solders the graphics chipset TO the Copper Pads. (Which in turn means it solders the graphics chipset, TO the motherboard) With inadequate cooling, caused by the laptop being dirty inside; the graphics chipset overheats. Constant overheating causes the solder connections, or solder joints; to partially melt. Then the laptop is turned off, and the solder joints re-solidify. This causes Cold Solder joints. Which causes a bad connection of graphics chipset, TO motherboard. IMHO the laptop does not need an increase in cooling surface area; for the graphics chipset; ON the Cooling Tube. Two separate Cooling Tubes, two separate Fan Assembly's, and two Heatsinks; are what make me draw this conclusion. This small video (5 minutes) gives you more information on the BGA surface mount, by using a BGA Rework Station; for an example. Also this IS the correct method for reflowing the graphics chipset,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEpnqhRYG... (Ignore the adding of copper sheeting, for more cooling surface area for the graphics chipset) HOWEVER instead of having the graphics chipset reflowed, it IMHO is more cost effective to just replace the motherboard. This is drawn by a conclusion of prices I have seen on Ebay, (Supposed to be tested), and what the cost of reflowing may be. $75 plus shipping and tax, compared to around $125 to reflow, and disassemble/reassemble laptop. You may have better luck with reflowing, don't know. NOT advertising for website, nor seller; just a reference point,http://www.ebay.com/itm/Compaq-Presario-... $3 to $5 ESD wrist strap, mutli-compartment container, and motherboard you're on your way. You have the link to the Service Manual, and you have me right here for guidance. Regards, joecoolvette

Hmmm, wh@t happened here, lol? THIS, is the link to the BGA Rework Station video,http://www.ersa.com/art-ir-pl-650-346-14... Scroll down, click on the Red - Take a few minutes to view the IR 650 demo video. There,......think I got it this time! I do NOT concur with the reflowing method used in the Youtube video. However I do want to state; This tech is using a senstitive special probe thermometer, and checking all around the graphics chipset; as he evenly applies heat, at the specific temperature required, AND length of time. The graphics chipset is to also be cooled down Slowly. The tech has stated however, that the BGA Rework Station is THE best method, and would send out motherboards to have this procedure done. IMHO the guy is an excellent tech. Just do not approve of this particular reflow method. (Also; DO NOT ever use an oven, or the stack the coins trick, or any of that baloney. EVEN if it does work, I assure you that it is Temporary ) Ovens are just bunk. You're heating EVERY chipset on that motherboard, and the method is just bunk.

The Operating System is on the Harddrive.

Windows.

You have physically installed a Harddrive that is Blank. No Operating System on it.
Suggest use the Restoration Disk, and perform a Full Install.
(Destructive Installation)

The Restoration Disk has the basic Windows files on it.

Don't have the Restoration Disk?

Posting from USA experience;

Contact HP Support. (HP bought out Compaq)

The disk is free. The shipping and handling is not.
$17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
Call 800-474-6836 - 24hrs a day; 7 days a week.

Have the Serial Number written down to give to the nice representative.
This is in the white Service Tag, on the bottom of the laptop.
S/N = Serial Number

For other countries use HP Support Worldwide for the contact number,

SOURCE: the power plug won't charge the battery which prevents the computer coming on

With no battery fitted to the Laptop and the power supply fitted and working o/k, the Laptop is dead. Could it be the convertor on the motherboard faulty , if so, can it be repaired.

let it sit for awhile. then try to power it on. if it powers up and then suts off again, the processor fan is probably bad and needs to be replaced.

Also, take the battery out and tryy to power it up.

SOURCE: Compaq Presario R3000. Push power button and

Either the power supply is putting out too low voltage or the power jack is bad.Try moving the ac adapter tip around while its starting up to see if it keeps it running or shuts it off.If it makes no difference try another ac adapter that does work for sure and see if thats the problem. If neither approach works, then the HDD may be seizing or one of the ram sticks may be bad. Some sort of hardware conflict can cause shut downs. You would have to take the bootstrap approach to narrow it down to one pacific component.
