I have a similar situation. Trying to print from a HP LaserJet 4 using a parallel cable to USB. It will not recognize the printer. What is the installation setup or what is the trick to get it to print?

Re: can i connect hp laserjet 4p via usb ??
Yes it will work. I know we have had to do that at our office before. You can find usb to parallel cables online like Tigerdirect.com and some other places. You can also get an adapter as well. If you need more help let me know.

try a usb/ Parallel Printer Adapter Cable cable you can find them at office supply stores or others such as walmart. http://www.walmart.com/ip/15075022?adid=22222222227000586714&wmlspartner=wlpa&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=&wl3=21486607510&wl4=&wl5=pla&veh=sem
Have you connected it via Ethernet and installed the software on your office's server? If not then you will have to set it up as a USB or parallel on one pc and then all the other computers on the network will have to print to the IP address on the network of the PC it is connected to and then set up each machine to access that printer.
On the back of the printer where the cable connects is actually a 36 pin connector, the end going to the computer is the 25pin end. What you will need to do is get a USB to parallel cable, they run $15-25, this will have the USB plug on one end and the 36pin centronix printer connection on the other end. This cable will allow your printer to be connected to the laptop. Office Depot and Staples should have the cable you need, if not you can do a google search for it and order one online.
I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.
You don't write how exactly is your printer connected - if I remember correctly, HP LJ 4P doesn't have a USB connector, and Vostro doesn't have the parallel port available. So how did you connect it? Is it via some USB to parallel adaptor, or via JetDirect network card in the printer? There are multiple separate issues that may be applicable in either case...
