Sam thank you for your response. It is a TEAC X-2000R. It has been sitting up quite a few years now 6 or so not being used.It appears what you suggested is just basc maintenance. Correct?

You can call it basic maintenance but for some people they would consider it beyond their abilities. The X2000R is such a complicated deck with tension adjustments, bely positioning and oil needed in rotating surfaces that it is not for your everyday tinkerer to attempt to work on this unit. It gives seasoned Technician such as myself of over 45 years of service plenty of trouble. You can try it if you like but the correct belt- usually NOT from E bay needs to be put in and then speed calibration and oiling and cleaning of other parts. You also should have a Tentelometer that is required for the tension arm adjustmnents which I always find completely off of what they should be 50-60 g/cm value. I am in Chicago if you need my help, Russ is in New Jersey.

Sam, again thank you for your response. Since this equpt. is as heavy as a tank I do not think I have the abillity to tinker with it. I am outside New Orleans do you know of a qualified shoppe that could handle this in my area?....or.... is there another route I can do to get it up and running........and.......if it needs parts besides 'belts' are they still available?

I am not aware of any shop that handle the repair in your area. To my knowledge there are only two places that are effective in working on those units and one is in New Jersey and I am in the Chicago area. The units are heavy but can be shipped by Fed Ex ground. I am working on units shipped to me now and get them in all the time form all over the USA. Should you wish to talk this out I can do so. (630) 616-0932

You do not mention the brand or model number which to answer the question effectively is needed- different machines are designed in different ways. The function of the fast wind and the play mode only differs in that in play a capstan is involved that regulates the speed and the reel motors just do the take-up of taper and a little back tension for the supply reel. You may have either a sticky Pinch Roller linkage or a non- rotating capstan shaft that might point to a loose or broken capstan drive belt. There are also the condition of the Pinch Roller surface and the surface of the Capstan shaft that can be glazed or rubber hard and non-compliant. The rubber Pinch Roller can be re-rubbered, the capstan shaft can be reconditioned and the Capstan Belt can be replaced. Capstan bearings and motor bearings need oil once a year as well. I hope this helped to some extent- I have been working on decks now for better than 40 years.

SOURCE: Teac X1000R Reel to reel

Hi there. It will need a new pinch roller, and has a bias oscillator. problem. From memory, they use a module for the oscillator, and the pinch rollers are easy to get. Sorting out the bias may be the problematic part, and you will need to recalibrate the bias traps and controls if you want max performance from the unit once repaired. I would go about checking things like intermittent tape bias switch, and try wriggling the record play switch( internally) and see if you can get erase and rec back. Noisy intermittent switches can caused the symptoms you have.

If you are able to, I would be seeking a refund. If not, then repairs are feasible. Let me know where you are and I can help you find a repair guy. Cheers

SOURCE: RS-TR272 dual deck and capstans seem to be locked

DO NOT spray anything into this unit. The problem is a slipping belt and is a simple fix for any audio shop. While possible, it is rare for a motor to fail. There is a small belt that drives the take up side along with a felt clutch assembly that can slip. If this is the case, the unit will realize that the take-up reel is not turning and shutdown the unit. Please have this serviced. The belts will run around $6-$10 total.

My reel to reel will not play.

You need a new capstan belt or the capstan shaft is glazed as well as you have a hard shiny Pinch Roller. Each of these items need to have friction to work.

I have a Teac A-6300 that won't go fast forward or reverse but the capstan motor is running

The Capstan motor is just for the play speed regulation so it has nothing to do with the reel motors. You can have an open safety microswitch or maybe a bad relay. It is really hard to say without looking at the unit but I am sure it is repairable. Is the right dummy plug put in the back? This can stop all transport functions if it is out.

I have a single cassette deck Philips DC 900 when you hit the play button,it plays for about 5 seconds then stops and head retracts. Belts have been replaced

It's not seeing the takeup reel turning.
Either the takeup reel isn't turning or the takeup reel sensor has malfunctioned.
Check the belt to the takeup reel by doing a fast forward.
Will it fast forward? and is the takeup reel spinning during playback?

A 303 cassette deck - the belt has been changed. The feed spool and capstan turn fine. The take up spool does not turn and play stops after 5 sec. Take up spool is fine in fast forward. Help !

This is a case of a failing reel motor. What happens i sthe brushes become aged and wear down and the motor has what they call a dead spot on the Commutator. The motor will work fine at high speeds as the inertia is working for it but when you use a slow speed as in play mode the motor hits the dead spot and stops. You will need a new reel motor in the most likely case- I can service the deck if you want at Skywave Tape Deck Repair Chicago area. I will most likely put a new motor into the deck.

I recently inherited an A-2340 $ Channel Reel To Reel Steror Tape Deck from my Grandfather who performed multi-track recordings in the 1960's. I have powered it up and all seems to work properly except the...

open the back cover and try to push rew. and fwd. then play and observe what is going on. if there is a ticking sound (eg..tick..tick...tick...tick) then it may be a gear has lost teeth on it. other than that it might be lubrication and belt deteriorating issues. my father in law has a similar one. and thats all that was wrong with his.but to me sounds like mainly lubrication issues, but this mechanism also uses belts for the the auto-reverse by flipping the head block around. This belt
will also need changing, and the head block
removed and taken apart to lubricate.

hope this helps
