Turns on and Turns off

The furnace turns on but about 10 seconds later it turns off and then waits another 10 seconds and turns on again. Is something hooked up wrong? Why is it doing this?

  • Annie924 Mar 10, 2009

I have the same problem- seems to be always in the early morning- it turns on and off repeatedly and won't stop unless i turn the unit off or it goes to a time where it is time to blow hot air again. I had a furnace company come look, they did a complete inspection and found nothing. Should we put in a manual thermostat or just a new digital on?

Does the furnace burners light? You could have a bad thermostat or a flame sensor. To check if it is thermostat turn power off to furnace take thermostat off wall take wires marked r & w and connect them together then turn power back on. If furnace comes on and stays on then you need a new themostat if not it is the flame sensor inside furnace. Also check furnace filter

Rv furnace stopped working

Quick call the installer to see if it is still under warranty. There is something wrong if the motor is being replaced every other year. Most of the motors should be lubed with fan turbine oil and not 3 in 1, nor detergent containing oils. If the wrong oil is used, the bearings will go south in 1 to 2 years.

My television does this thing now where you can turn it on and 10 seconds later it turns right back off again and when you go to turn it off from the power button it won't let you.

The horizontal output section to your TV has some shorted component/s. Check and replace them. Contact any experienced service technician.

,Hello, Make sure the flame sensor is clean near the burners, The flame sensor is a metal rod that is on the opposite side of the ignitor. To clean the flame sensor you will need some steel wool, turn off power to the furnace and remove the flame sensor and clean it with the steel wool. After cleaning reinstall it and turn power back on to furnace.

If your furnace lights and the gas stays on for 8 to 10 seconds, then shuts right back off, then you need to clean your flame sensor with light sand paper or steel wool. You might need a new flame sensor, but most of the time they can be cleaned an will work well after cleaning.

Flame sensor dirty

Sandpaper lightly scrubbed over the sensor tip to remove any contamination.

Sometimes cleaning is not enough and the sensor must be replaced.

Rheem Furnace sometimes takes a couple of ignition cycles before

Try cleaning the flame sensor. It is located right besides the last burner. Looks like a thick piece of wire. Take steel wool and gently remove the carbon that has built up. Should only take 4 or 5 strokes. Let me know how it goes after that. ken
