I seem to have lost all sound on my HP Pavilion laptop

It is one year old. I think the problem is in the settings, as I was trying to adjust them

    yes they are

  • n9ely_barb Jan 13, 2009

What is "fn" key, I don't see it, on f1, f2, etc.

  • n9ely_barb Jan 13, 2009

I found the fn key, but I don't see a speaker key, which one is it? I don't think it is the drivers because when I look at the sound details it shows that the speakers are playing, i just can't hear anything

  • n9ely_barb Jan 13, 2009

Even with headphones there is no sound, but if you look at the volume adjustment it shows '"playing" and the green meter is going up and down

  • n9ely_barb Jan 13, 2009

re-installing the drivers worked! We now have sound. but the problem I still have is that media player flickers every one to two seconds. It is almost like a radio scanning channels, the sound bar also flickers every one to two seconds

    Hi there
Go into "device manager" and look to see if any sound drivers are installed, then post back

Ok have a look at the bottom right hand side of the screen at the system tray, if there is a red round circle on the speaker icon then the speakers are muted, you may have to active them via the keyboard toggle, hold down Fn and locate the sound keys (usually the "F" keys), If this doesn't work go back into device manager and uninstall the sound drivers, reboot the laptop and the drivers will re-install by themselves, that should do the trick

Good luck

    Hi again
The "Fn" key is usually next to the "Ctrl" key and the letters are blue instead of white

    Hi again
The sound keys are the same colour of the Fn key and are at the top of the keyboard.
Get a pair of earphones and plug then into the laptop to rule out possible speaker damage
    post back please

It sounds like there are bad sound drivers, if its Vista you are using it can be a common problem and you will get no error message and things will look ok but in actual fact they are not. Re-install the drivers as i described in my previous thread

    Good luck

    Hi again
it sounds like operating systems degrading, de-fragment the hard drive and reboot the pc, this will take in excess of an hour, try the media player again after-wards, if you still get the same flickering problem try a different media player so see if its the same on that one, download XP codec pack, install it and use "media player classic" to play the files, it will be on the desktop after you install the codec pack.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya

Blue Fn key and look for speaker picture.
Press them simultaneously.

Else, START > Control Panel > SOUNDS and AUDIO DEVICES > de-check mute.

I'vs had my HP Pavilion Dv9000 laptop about 2 months now, and it has been great. recently however sounds have only been coming from the right sound channel. The left side just makes a starng buzzing noise...

There is a problem is the sound card. The HP laptop should be still under warranty, take it to the supplier to get it repaired under warranty. If you try to fix it yourself you most likely will void your warranty.

HP Pavilion dv2020us laptop battery won't charge

How is your power supply? does it seem like you have to wiggle your cord that connects to computer to make it recieve power?...Many laptops power supply become loose over time form moving the cord around..when it does, the battery has a hard time getting electric power to recharge. Also, you my have other problems with your lithium internal battery that powers your cmos.

Check to see if your power supply is loose and go from there. the power supply is the little hole where you connect the cord to the laptop.

let me know what the status is

Hp pavilion zd8000 just over 2 years old

Sounds like you are getting a supply line issue which is well known on these models. Pull the battery, Boot into BIOS, (F10 at the splash screen) And see if it will run for an extended period of time. Next if it does Boot into Safe mode and do the same..(This is F8).. Post back..
