Not sure which mode my calculator might be in...

Most keys on my calculator will not work or I get something different then what I selected. For example, if I hit 1, 0 pops up on the screen. I tried hitting 3 minus 2 and I recived the exponent form for 1.

Change to a different angular mode. Press the DRG key, use the left/right arrow to select the desired mode, then press ENTER twice.

Be aware that whatever angular mode you select, the display will show either "DEG", "RAD", or "GRAD" to indicate the mode.

Deg rad grad

You don't.

Angles can be measured using three different units: degrees (360 degrees in a circle), radians (2pi radians in a circle), or grads (400 grads in a circle).

Pressing the DRG key cycles through the three modes. No matter which mode you select, one of the annunciators will appear on the screen to indicate the current mode.

When i type in a decimal and then hit math and try to convert into a fraction, my calculator still shows the decimal as the answer. im pretty sure im doing it right but i dont know what is wrong. is there...

Yes, there is a feature or, setting in the mode that will stop you from converting fractions. Go to the mode screen by pressing the [MODE] key. [Down arrow] 9 times and, highlight and select the n/d by pressing the [ENTER] key. Next, [Down arrow] 1 time and, highlight and select Frac by pressing [ENTER] key. Just escape or, quit out of the mode screen and, the calculator should now be set up to convert your fractions. Just remember to go back and, change the last setting you made when you go back to dealing with decimal numbers.

It sounds like you need a manual for your calculator. You can download a scanned copy here, and it will explain what all the keys are for. For now, here is the way to set the calculator for a five decimal place display:
  1. Press the MODE key three times. A menu offering choices of FIX, SCI or NORM will appear.
  2. Press the 1 key to select FIX mode. The message "0~9?" will appear.
  3. Press the 5 key. This tells the calculator to display five digits after the decimal.
This mode setting will hold until you change it to something else, or when you turn off the calculator.

Spend some time reading the manual and work with the calculator. It's a powerful tool with a lot of capabilities. Thanks for using Fixya!

Ti 89 Titanium

The only option or keys that will work is the ENTER key and the arrow keys. Try to get your arrow key to work by arrowing down and hit enter hopefully change you to something different.
Next, if at all possible can you hit the MODE key or get into the mode. If you get into the MODE select F3 and then arrow down twice or all the way to the bottom and at APPS Desktop select 1:OFF and then hit the ENTER key. Next, What I really think you need to do is reinstall the Ti 89 OS software. To do so you would need to connect to your computer or another Ti 89 Titanium to your Ti 89 Titanium. If you have Ti connect computer software (from the Ti site) connected to your Ti 89 Titanium it might help you more in troubleshooting any further problems too. You might be able to delete corrupt files that would free your calculator up and start running better.
