Question about JVC Televison & Video
When I place a blank dvd in the recorder, it should initialize the disc. Instead, "read" appears in the display, followed by the whirring of the disk, a coupleof clicks and then the disc door opens and it shuts off. When I use the set up menu, under disc, "initialize," "finalize,' "disc label," and "disc protect" do not light up and, therefore cannot be selected. However, when I selct PBC, the aforementioned areas DO light up, but still cannot be selected because as soon as the cursor is moved from PBC, they go dim again. . . I cannot record because the machine automatically tries to read a disc that has not been initialized. I tried initializing the disc using my computer . . . nothing.

SOURCE: Initializing DVD
If you know you're using a readable disc, clearly the drive is the source of the problem. It's possible that the drive's laser has become dirty to the point that it can't read the disc. Open the drive's caddy and spray into the drive with compressed air. The blast of air should blow away any dust buildup over the laser. Pop a disc into the drive and try to read it again.
