Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

I have a Compaq Presario F500 laptop that is about 6 months old and the internal wireless card is going out. It takes about 2 hours of restarting before it actually turns green and picks up the signal. I don't see a spot to put in an external wireless card and my computer person says that it's too expensive to repair an internal and I need to get an external. Is the F500 different? Can I use a wireless card that perhaps connects through the USB port?

You could try using a wireless adapter that connects through usb but the connection is not as strong. Otherwise I would try to buy an internal wireless card which is just installed into a PCI slot on your motherboard.

I bought this computer 5-6 years ago. And it has been in the box since. Is it capable of wireless connection

It is not wireless capable out of the box. However, it has 2 free PCI slots for an internal wireless card and several USB ports for a USB wireless adapter.

I hope this helps.

I have a laptop compaq f500. i did a recovery cd and now my wirless does not work. infact the icon at the bottom right is not showing.help -redstick

You need to ge the newest drivers for your wireless card. See if Compaq offers any wireless drivers. Another option is go to Microsoft update.
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-US
Click on Custom rather than Express install.
Look on the left and there should be a high priority tab, a software tab and a hardware tab. Click on Hardware and see if it is offering drivers for your wireless card.

Hi there,

If your model is”Compaq Presario F500EA”, then your XP drivers are to be found HERE:

If it is one of the F500 family (ex. Compaq Presario F502AU Notebook PC), then you have to visit THIS site and select your model.

Wireless trouble

Please try to check if the wireless adapter is listed on the DEVICE MANAGER.

WinXP
Please click the START button, then click CONTROL PANEL. Click the PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE icon, then click the SYSTEM icon. Click the HARDWARE tab. Click the DEVICE MANAGER button.

And look for the wireless adapter

And for Vista you can check the site below.
