My laptop wont recognise my dynamode external hard disk enclosure

It has a red light all the time ive connected both usb's to my laptop and the hard drive

SOURCE: Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

Right Click on My Computer, click on Manage, go to Disk Managment, if the drive is available you will see it there. Check to see if it has a drive letter assigned to it, if not right click on it and choose Change Drive letters. Make sure you are on the external drive though, you don't want to change your C drive accidentally. It should pop up in My Computer.

I've pretty much decided that it must be a hardware problem within the harddrive itself...Can anyone lead me in the right direction to maybe take out the harddrive to put into another external shell in order to hopefully recover my data? Again I'm using a Seagate Freeagent Desktop 500GB external harddrive.

My buffalo ministation 3.0 external hard drive wont be recognised by my comuter. to be honest i dropped it, but when i plug it into computer green light starts flashing, after a while fashing stops green...


My ministation was doing the same, beeping and flashing green light after a light drop on the floor. Soo... I took my ministation usb drive out of the plastic enclosure and smacked it on the table a few times. Plugged it in and it spun back up!! Now my computer recognizes it and everythings working smooth! I assume something with the drive became jammed and the couple smacks loosened the drive head.. Anyway, if all else fails... beat it!

If your PC and Laptop can not detect your external hard drive, I do suggest you check its usb cable. A substitute cable will confirm if your current usb cable is faulty or has an open wire.

Most common reason why the external hard drive is not recognize by PC or Laptop is due to loose connection of the hard disk inside the connectors of the enclosure.

Anantsharma8, if you have a small precision screw, I recommend you open the enclosure of the external hard drive. Remove the front face where usb and power plug connects, then slide it out to expose the hard disk also. You will see two connectors. These are the ones that always loosen. Please disconnect both the connectors and then connect it again properly. Put the hard disk back, close the enclosure and try to connect again with your PC or laptop via usb cable.

It was OK until about a month ago. Now non of my computers recognise the Portable drive. It doesn't show in Manage also.


An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Hi I have maxtor 1TB external hard drive, not used it for over six month, now when I connect it, nothing happens, my laptop doesn't recognise or even sense/acknowledge it's existence!! Can you help?

and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Buy a new W.D. disk-drive through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

* the USB cable is damaged,

* inside the enclosure, the disk-drive is not functioning
(although the lamp indicates that it is getting electrical power)

* inside the enclosure, the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed.

If the warranty is still valid, W.D. will replace it, at no cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program; buy a new unit from their web-site, and you can get a discount, as a previous customer.

Or, open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and temporarily connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it is working at all.

Or, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and mount it into the enclosure, to make a "new" external disk-drive.

When I connect it to my laptop (or ANY other computer/laptop) the blue light on the external hardrive turns on and I can feel that it is working, but it simply doesnt get read, the computers dont recognise...


Open the enclosure.
Separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can read the files.

If not, search online for a professional 'data recovery service' -- for a FEE, they can repair a disk-drive just long-enough to copy your files onto a new disk-drive.

It is not recognising on any of my laptop/ desktop in the office


The external unit has two main parts:
* a disk-drive
* an adapter (USB-to-disk-drive)
and either part can fail.

So, disassemble the unit, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a 'slave' drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works. If it does, it points to the adapter as the problem.
