SOURCE: Dryer not turning off when clothes are dry (model LDE 400ACL)

Normally if you have an automatic cycle that turns off the dryer when the clothes are dry, it will do it with a special thermostat or moisture-sensing system. The thermostat tells the dryer to heat until the interior of the dryer reaches a "pre-set" temperature.
When the dryer reaches the pre-set temperature, the thermostat tells the timer to begin advancing. If there is a moisture sensor, the timer advances only if the moisture content of the clothing is low enough. The timer advances until the interior cools, then the termostat tells the timer to stop advancing, and tells the dryer to start heating again. This cycle continues until the clothes are dry. But... if the vent is clogged, the dryer may never reach the proper operating temperature, so it doesn't send the signal to the timer and the dryer continues to run indefinitely, even if the clothes are completely dry. To fix this problem, clean the vent and/or internal ductwork and make sure the vent is not compressed or kinked. If that doesn't work, then your thermostat, moisture sensor or timer could be the culprit.

The timer may be faulty.
Servicing the Timer

Most dryer timers are digital or mechanical. The timer controls most of the operations of the dryer. For this reason, any repairs to the timer should be made by a professional service person. However, there are a couple of checks you can make when you suspect the timer is faulty -- you may be able to install a new timer yourself.

Step 1: Unplug the dryer. To access the timer, remove the control knobs and the panel that covers the controls. This may be a front panel, or access may be through a panel at the back of the unit. Carefully examine the wires that connect the timer to the other parts of the washer. If the wires are loose or disconnected, try pushing them into position; they usually fit into their terminals like plugs. Use long-nosed pliers to avoid breaking the wire connections -- never pull a wire by hand.

Step 2: To test the timer, use a VOM set to the RX1 scale. Disconnect the power leads to the timer and clip one probe of the VOM to each lead. The VOM should read zero if the timer is working. Since the timer is a multiple switch, turn it through its cycle and test each pair of terminals in turn. The meter should read zero at all of these points. If one or more readings are above zero, the timer is faulty and should be replaced.
Step 3: To replace the timer, unscrew and disconnect the old one. Install a new timer made specifically for the dryer. If there are many wires on the timer, have a helper hold the new timer next to the old one as you work. Disconnect the old wires one at a time, connecting each corresponding new wire as you work, to make sure the connections are properly made. Or, draw a diagram showing the connections before removing the old timer. After all the wires are connected, check the connections again for correctness and screw the timer assembly into place.

It is taking far too long to dry, this has only recently started? what could be the problem?

Does it get hot? If it does, then the problem is reduced air flow, caused by a lint filter that hasn't been cleaned, masses of fluff in the exhaust pipe (usually on bends), or the external vent not opening properly. Birds can also nest in the vent pipe if the vent isn't protected or is broken.

If it doesn't get hot, you need a new element. Some dryers have two elements if the dryer has a high and low setting. just one element can fail.

Run a load empty on the hottest setting with a cup of bleach.

Then, after finished using the machine each day, leave the door open for a few hours to allow the rubber seal to dry.

Extremely low drum heat but setting is on HIGH.

Electric (Kenmore - 60931) dryer takes forever (several cycles) lately to dry clothes set on high heat (actual heat in tub feels low though). There are no obstructions in the venting and the 240 volt connection is fine. The timer rotates the dial (timer motor working). Help!!!
