You can't do this with USB. You need special cord - 1394 IEEE adapter on one end, and a DV adapter on the other (camera)end. This fits into slot on front of camera under and to the left of the microphone.

try a different usb cable. mine did that, used different cable and now it works fine. also you could try reinstalling the usb utility from the installation disk that came with the camcorder.

How do i download a video into my computer from the Sony Handycam DCR-HC21 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

There are two way to upload your picture's or video's to your pc:

  1. You can upload video to the use of your camcorder connector. Connect your USB cable to your camcorder and plug it to your computer. You need to turn on your camcorder so that it will be recognized by the computer.
  2. You can upload also your video's with the use of memory card reader. Remove your memory card from your camcorder and insert it to the card reader. Plug the card reader to the computer. The computer will recognized the card. Now you can upload your photo's or video's.

Transfer video to computer

I would like to know more about this USB adapter cable you bought. The camera has a IEEE-1394 (commonly refered to as Firewire or i-Link) connection that is inherently incompatible with USB. I don't see how one cable could do the trick unless it had some kind of conversion hardware built into it. Does it have a little box on the cable or is it just a straight cable?
CNet.com says that your laptop has a four pin Firewire port on it. I would go to BestBuy and tell them you need a Firewire cable with a four pin connector on both ends. If they give you a weird look tell them that is the small Firewire plug, not the big one. If they are still confused, get somebody else to help you. Then use that cable to plug your camera into your computer. Windows should recogonize it automatically. If it doesn't there may be a problem with you camera.

Connecting to Computer

Look at the camera as though you were peering into the lens. On the front face of the camera in the lower left hand corner, there is a rubber plug labeled DV In/Out. Under that plug is an IEEE-1394 port (firewire). You will need to purchase a firewire cable and have a computer with the same port (some are four pin and others are six pin...I believe the four pin is more common, but the cable will need to match). When you plug the camera to the computer, it should be detected automatically similar to a USB device. You will also need to have the software for capturing and editing the video. My HP laptop came with a fairly decent program called Cyberlink Powerdirector. You can check out the videos I've done on youtube with my DCR-TRV103 at www.youtube.com/user/stu11926.
