Question about Dell Dimension E310 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have two dell computers. A dell Optima GX270 with an 80 Gig harddrive (that is my primary business computer) and a Dimension E310 P4 with an 80 Gig harddrive with a hidden reserve harddrive. The Optima ceased operating this morning. As a consequence I want to move the 80 Gig harddrive from the Optima to the Dimension and make the Dimension my new primary computer. Here are the issues. 1) Which physical drive is the primary and which is the reserve? 2) Do I have to format the reserve to clean off existing data before installing the 80 Gig from the Optima? How do I do this as it is hidden? 3) How do I instruct the Dimension to make a complete backup of the new harddrive? 4) It looks like Dell has propritary method of removing and installing harddrives - I need you to talk me through how to do a Dell.

To know which is which all you need to is look on the harddrive to the back where the jacks go when you remove the jacks you will see a little plastic jack on two pins you can remove the jack to make the harddrive reserve once you remove this jack the hardddrive is know longer the main one.If you any problems please let me know thank you. Wont see slave Hard Drive in a Dell Dimension 2400

Did you set the Master harddrive as master?

Or is your reference that you set the jumper cap, on the jumper pins; of both harddrives to Cable Select?

What are the manufacturer names, and model numbers of the two harddrives?

If you just see something like - WD2500JB, that will work.

How many wire is the Flat IDE ribbon cable?

There are 40 wire versions, and 80 wire versions.

Notice I stated - Wire.
They will both have 39 socket holes that are used.
(40 socket holes, with 1 blocked off)

80 wire IDE ribbon cable has Master harddrive in middle.
Slave harddrive at end of cable.
Little weird, huh?

40 wire IDE ribbon cable, has Master harddrive at end of cable, Slave in middle.

As for, "Computer will not see it."

Not trying to insult your intelligence. Am trying to see if we are both on the same page.............

1) You go to My Computer, and there is no drive letter assigned to that harddrive you just installed?

If it is there, you double-click on it to open that harddrive.

Please post back in a Comment.

Well a friend of mine bought a replacement motherboard an E310 for his computer and now the it turns on but isnt working. the powerlight is staying amber and not turning green

Make sure The P4 Power connector cable is Plugged into The motherboard (pictured)flooganbarg.jpg

If that is not your problem you should look to make sure there's stand offs holding the motherboard in the case and it's not just screwed in and touching the metal case, this would cause a short and prevent the motherboard from Posting.

You may also want to check if the power button is correctly hooked up to the motherboard.

I closed my business last month and my desk top dell dimension was networked with microsoft xp pro and i want to take the hard drive from that somputer and install it in my home computer which is a stand...

HI,
When you remove the harddrive from a computer and plug it into a different machine though of the same model. It would not boot, because the operating system product key is unique to the machine. If you want to use this particular hdd in your home system, make it a secondary harddrive or reload windows on the harddrive again. But doing so , you would remove everything from the harddrive.
