Can anyone tell me what pins on the main board need to be shorted out to acomplish reseting the bios.

  • Terry McConnell Dec 12, 2012

a little more info. When I turn on the laptop the screen stays blank and the caps lock key led blinks twice and continues to blink. according to HP this is an indicator of a corupted bios. they say it can be fixed by reseting the bios but do not tell you which jumpers have to be shorted. I took the mainboard out and located the bios but there are no jumpers on the board.

Problem Solved! It was not a corrupted bios as indicated on HP's web site. It was a bad memory module. Removed the bad one and everything is working fine.

Hi.

The HP G62 does not have jumpers on the motherboard to short the CMOS/BIOS to reset it, all you can do is turn the laptop upside down and then remove battery and the memory & wifi cover, under that cover you will see a black, round penny shaped item with red wires coming from it. Follow the wires and unplug it. That is the CMOS/BIOS or RTC battery, leave both the main battery and the CMOS battery out for at least 10 minutes. Below is a picture for you to refer to.

Try to use your research as a guide of resetting the BIOS , not a specific model of computer. By the way , why do you want to reset the BIOS?

    Is this the version you upgraded to , 2011-03-01 , Version:F.27, 4.06M?

When starting the laptop the screen remained black and the caps key would flash twice repeatedly. According to HP that error indicated a corupted bios and the sugggested fix was to reset the bios. Turns out it was not the BIOS at all but a defective memory module. I removed the bad one and everything is back up and working. Thanks for trying to help.

how do i identify and replace a defective memory module. I have the same problem

  • Anonymous Jul 31, 2017

5 long years later ANON Hyjacks the post ,why?
why not take it to shop and get it fixed?
read the HP service book yet,.? it covers this.

or ask kingston memory (google that name)
if you never seen a DMM before, leave it be.
we use ESD protection touching all that. or boom.

  • Anonymous Jul 31, 2017

why in the world think you have the same problem.
not only that HP lied to him
    that is correct
    those errors are compute errors
if the CPU can not add 2+2 and get 4 but gets 5 , guess what?, it cant tell you anything true.
ever.again. (until that is cured first)
    first things first.
    here is a list.
BAD POWER (any of the 3)(ac/main bat, and coin)
    Bad CPU or bad ram.
    Bad mobo .
shorted modules on the mobo (remove them now)
that includes install the wrong ram
    as most do.
in fact the older the pc the more likely
you will get wrong ram or bad ram used.

get it at a top site like this.
    ever seen this?
    http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/deskto...

changing the CPU or ram are not trivial at all
    here is why.
Speed must match or exceed spec, of pc.
size limits ,like 1gb per slot and system limits total ,some are 2GB max.
voltage rules, low /high or both.
density rules, on say an old I3/I5 processor they had very very strict rules here.
    bus-loading rules.
1 sided and 2 sided Ram stick rules (old)
and more..and related to density rules.
    and more...

that is why asking the maker is best.

Reset bios cmos

Read the PDF in the link below on page #3 listed as JBAT1. Open your case and locate the CMOS reset pins. Move the reset jumper from current position (usually Pins 1+2) to reset position (usually pins 2+3) Power on the computer and hit keyboard key (F10) to get to the Bios and check if Bios was reset.. Consider that password protection will not normally be removed on CMOS reset, you will need to ask HP or look around the internet for a way to reset a password protected Bios.

Reset BIOS on HP Pavilion a750w

Fastest way to reset BIOS is to remove the CMOS battery (looks like a large watch battery on Motherboard) for 30 minutes. After you replace the battery, the BIOS should reset to default. If further problems arise involving the BIOS, it's possible the CMOS battery is bad.

EliteBook 8530p bios password

Generally, there are two ways to reset forgotten HP BIOS password. One is forcing BIOS/CMOS to reset itself to its stored defaults by removing all power to it. The other is to use a program to either locate or identify the password and reveal it to you or erasing the password entirely.
And the most easiest and convenient method for erasing dynamic BIOS/CMOS settings is to remove battery directly from the motherboard. It applies to most motherboards besides HP Elitebook BIOS. At this moment, HP Elitebook based on UEFI Bios provides a tool to reset BIOS password specially - HP SpareKey.

How to reset BIOS password with SpareKey?
1. Before forgot BIOS password, you have set answers to three predetermined personal identification questions.
Write down the answers to these questions and put them in a safe place, away from the computer, so that you can always access them.

2. When you cannot remember the password to access the BIOS on your computer, turn on the computer and immediately press the ESC key to display the Startup Menu. And then press the F7 key.

3. HP SpareKey wizard pops up and prompts you for the answers to the three personal identification questions. If you successfully answer the questions, you are granted access and you can reset the password.
If you do not answer the questions correctly in the three attempts, you will be locked out of your computer. And then you must contact HP for assistance.

Note: HP SpareKey cannot help you recover a Windows 7 or Vista administrator account password. It is intended solely to recover system-level passwords.
