SOURCE: opening an elgin pocket watch

The best tool to do it is watchmakers knife, but any proper knife with hardened steel blade can do the job. Make sure the blade is NOT flexible.
Check carefully the sides of your watch and you will notice the groove. Place knife blade into that groove and press it in. At the same time try to make a scooping turn to lift the caseback. Usually there must be underlayed caseback as well and it opens exactly in the same manner.
Make sure you do all this carefully and do not let the blade to slip or your watch will end up with nasty scratches or even damaged movement.
That job isn't a big deal, but requires some skill, so, BE CAREFULL.

How much is a ELGIN men's Diamond Base Metal Bezel FG007 017 PC21 Japan Movt stainless steel back wrist watch worth

probably not as much as you think it is worth. There are to many varibles to consider value. An item is only worth what another person is willing to give you for it. If you truly want its value, go have it appraised. That will cost you to get a qualified appraisal.

I have a Elgin Pocket Watch that i cannot open to get to the movement and serial number. The company "logo" is in Cursive Elgin Natl. Watch Co. and the winding stem is in the 3 oclock position....

The back is probably a screw on back like the front bezel. If it doesn't come off easily take it to a watchmaker rather than doing damage. Try placing the watch in the palm of your hand and place the other palm on top of the watch. Like a sandwich. Now try twisting the back loose. Lefty loosey.. righty tighty! If you get it open be very careful. Remember the watchmaker's motto. DO NO DAMAGE!
Good luck

I have an older timex mens wrist watch and I would like to know where I can look to find the model number on it. It is a wind not battery powered. Thank you for your help.

mcdevito75 here, I just took a peak into my own Older Timex watch, even though it"s a ladies the model number was on the movement itself and only a 3 digit number. Since the older Timex watches were mass produced this is all you may have as far as serial numbers go, and Timex did all their own watches so a serial number may only be 3--4--5 digits long. Anyway, double check the entire watch with a magnifier glass for the serial number, then check inside the back cover and movement itself. Here is Timex contact info, 800-448-4639 if needed.

I need to open the back of an Elgin pocket watch to find the production number, there is no obvious way to access it. It is a very old watch

The back screws off counter clock wise.

If you will post the ser number off the movement we can tell you almost all production information about this watch.

Hope this tip helps.

New watch is losing 5 to 15 minutes a day

This could be that the battery is slow. Newer swiss watches have a indicator in the movement of the watch that makes the sweep second hand skip every few seconds to indicate that the battery is slow. On regular japan made watches the watch just simply starts slowing down. Your watch could be new but the battery in it could have a long shelf life.
