You could have provided an operating system ?

Restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer
If done properly the user should get to a screen similar to the below screen. Select the option for Safe mode command prompt only Windows Advanced Options Menu
Please select an option: Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice. Select safe mode with command prompt then type in chkdsk/f/r which will scan for and and attempt repair of bad files and bad sectors on hard drive You should have no input while chkdsk utility is in progress any input might further damage your computer also Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue and then replace the file. Type the following command and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: due to some microsoft updates

if you have zone alarm on your computer, the problem is that there is a conflict with the new microsoft update and zone alarm

click on start, control panel, internet options, and then the security tab

drop the security settings down to low and see if you can go online. If you can, it is definately the new microsoft update conflict.

Go to www.zonealarm.com after you get online and click on the yellow section on the right down towards the bottom middle-ish. Zone alarm is aware of the problem and has come out with a patch to fix it. Just click on the link provided and reload the product you purchased and wahla, you back in business my freind.

SOURCE: is there any way to

That vintage Gateway (although I do not recall a "GC400" or even a GX400--assuming a typo) had a recovery partition that can be accessed via a key pressed during the boot process.

Note all the onscreen insrutions during boot. If one of hem offers a Restore option, follow its instruction.

If not, it may be accessible from the boot menu. Press the F8 key repeatedly during the boot process to bring up the boot menu. Follow the onscreen prompts to effect a Restore.

SOURCE: I need a system recovery disk for my Gateway Desktop

If the computer originally came with a backup software disk, you can try contacting gateway for a replacement. If the backup software was instead on a dedicated partition of the original drive you will need an XP home system disk, in which case you can probably get a better deal off the shelf at a retailer. Be sure you get the full version and not an upgrade, as you don't have any windows system currently installed for an upgrade to detect. If your Gateway has a Windows XP COA affixed and you can borrow a full XP Home installation disk from a friend you can install from that disk inputting your number from your COA when prompted. (don't use your friends COA) Microsoft will recognize this as a genuine restored installation so long as you have not changed any other major hardware in the system, and you input the same information for activation as you did originally. And you can get the service packs and other updates just as you always have.

Or: you could become a Linux user for free. For the Linux newbie I would have to recommend the Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS for their user-friendliness. Again that's FREE! if you try it and don't like it you're out exactly $0.00! My systems have been Linux exclusively for about 7 years, and am kinda partial to the Mandriva distributions, though I tried PCLinuxOS a while back and have had that on this system ever since, though it has it's quirks. But don't all systems?

SOURCE: Gateway GT4010 bootup disk

If you have good internet access, you can download a live Linux distribution such as Knoppix, and burn the it to CD. Don't let the word "Linux" scare you out of this, Knoppix is very user-friendly. And there is loads of resources available online. Anyway, burn the CD, and boot the computer from it. It will take a little time to boot, as it is a live version running only in RAM. It has very powerful applications though, and you can access your hard drive from it so long as the drive is not corrupted beyond readability. If you can access the hard drive, you can view your files, and copy the files to a USB drive. Once you have your data, you can then shut down and restore windows if the drive will cooperate, or install to a new drive if necessary.

!!! Knoppix will not write to or erase any data from your hard drive without you give it permission to do so !!! It is about your safest option in that respect.

Just google Knoppix to find download sites. Most sites have instructions for downloading and burning your copy. And it's all FREE!!!

The recovery disk is model specific and basically garbage. You'd be better off getting an install disc for Windows or another operating system. Many flavors of Linux are available and FREE.

Installed new hard drive into Toshiba M35X-S163 due to old HD completely breaking, installed new 320gb HD, but the recovery disk from Toshiba doesn't want to work, keeps 'cycling' the recovery process,...

You will need to talk to whoever you got the HD from. It should have come with a format disk since HD have barely changed over the last ten years they can still be setup for just about anything form FAT16 to the latest Mac use.
The reason you are having troubles is that the HD doesn't know what format you are giving it. Whenever i have bought a new HD it comes with a disc to format then you are good to use the OS disc to load up it is possible that the recovery disc is setup only for a Toshiba setup HD and not another generic format. you might what to call the toshiba help line (800) 457-7777 that is straight from their website. Best of luck my friend

when the computer is booting, hit the f12 key. this gets you to the bootup sequence windows. highlight the cd/dvd drive as first startup. reboot w/the recovery disk in the drive. this should allow you to format the hd and then install th files on the recovery disk.

My Thinkpad/Lenova R51 had a hard drive failure. I got a new hard drive and installed it in the computer. Then I attempted to use the rescue and recovery cd and the product recovery cd's that came with...

The partition that had the Lenovo image was on the old hard drive not the new one you purchased, so you will not be able to restore from image. Look on the bottom of the laptop for the Windows version. Is it Windows XP Home or Windows XP Pro? You will need a Microsoft Windows disk to reinstall and you can use the serial number on the sticker to activate. This is all legal because the serial number belongs to the laptop. Unfortunately, finding a Windows software might be difficult. Ask a friend if they have a disk of the same operating system.

Might be easier to take to a tech and pay $60.00 (I wouldn't pay nmore than that) and have them reinstall basic windows and drivers for you.

No Operating System; Cannot Format User Partition - Gateway MX595

Hi,

It seems that you have a corrupt user partition on your drive which is stopping you from doing a recovery.

What you will need to do is delete the partition(s) on your Gateway by using a system repair utility CD. ERD Commander 2005 or Bart are utilites that will allow you to boot from a CD and then delete the partitions.

You could also use a friend's Windows XP CD just to delete the partitions.

Once this is done, you should be able to re-install your OS (assuming there is no physical damage on the hard disk.

Hope this helps.

Here is the support page for your PC, you may wish to contact them about a recovery disc. You can reinstall the OS without it but it's usually cheaper to order the recovery disc (plus it comes with the drivers for your unit).

Hard drive failure in system less than 2 years old!!

Since you are comfortable with working inside your computer, the best thing to do now is to purchase an external enclosure for your type of hard drive, SATA or EIDE.

Alternately you can use a live linux cd, boot up with that, and transfer your data to an external drive.

Once your data is safe, try booting to the Windows cd and attempt a repair installation.

And finally, yes, hard drives can go bad in 2 years or less.

Help me to install WinXP in a Gateway Laptop that came with SATA HDD

you have probably already fixed this but maybe others can find this a little helpful. i had to downgrade a gateway ma7 for one of my customers who had lost their recovery cd with vista on it. Their HD had gone bad.

The reason the XP installer says "no HD" is because the the drivers required by the gateways Sata controller (hd controller) are not preloaded on the xp install disc. The only way around this is to download the windows xp compatible sata drivers from gateways website and then slipstream them into a custon windows xp install cd. its actually not as difficult as it sounds. just download the sata driver, a slipstreaming program called nlite.

1 download and install nlite
2 put in your xp install cd, and run nlite, when nlite asks, browse to the i386 folder (your installation files)
3 you will have lots of options to choose from, but for this purpose, choose "add drivers" and select the location of the gateway drivers (c:\cabs\something) i think.
4 finish and burn the cd. then use it to install windows xp.

this little guide isnt step by step, but with a little trial and error you should get by

My recovery CD (gateway 7330gz PC) are no working

I have the same problem with my Gateway 7330gz. My laptop got infected with spywares and it was so annoyed that I have to think about recover the system. So I did it with Gateway Recovery software. I chose the recovery option (press F11 when boot up)from hard drive since my dvd drive was broken. It went well but when it boots up again and Windows XP says detecting and installing the drivers and such, it was frozen haft way through. I turned off power many times to reboot but it kept freezing at that point. I search Internet for help and seen this post. Wonderful! I press F2 to go to BIOS setup screen, use right arrow key to move to Advance menu option. There I use down arrow key to select SpeedStep, hit (-) key to disable it. Then F10 to save and exit, hit enter for OK button. The system boots again but this time it was no longer freezing, the setup process went through ok and continues...I am so happy and type this message so it might help others with the same issue. Thanks
