Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Dell XPS M170 and I when I had the operating system upgraded from XP to Windows 7 my DVD starting making a clicking noise. I can see the DVD drive listed on my computer but I can not get any

I experienced a similar problem with my Sony VGN-FZ 260E and was unable to resolve until I restored Windows Vista. This makes me think it is a driver issue but I am not getting any warnings about the drivers.

Yeah, it would be nice to have that person reinstall everything but the problem is he is in Naples, Italy and I am in Okinawa, Japan now. I did go ahead and purchase an external DVD and it seems to be working fine on the Windows 7 O.S.

I have thought about just buying another drive but I am not sure if the current drive is bad or is it in fact a software issue.

Max: When I checked the Dell Website you sent me it does not list the Dell XPS M 170 as compatible with windows 7.

Try this, download and save to a folder, Windows Vista 32 bit driver for the DVD/CD rom "Applies to: ND-6650A Slim 8x DVD+/-RW" Open the location of the driver you just downloaded ,and take a look at this procedure: If that fails open Device Manager and uninstall the DVD/CD rom and reboot the machine, Win7 should find a unknown device and apply the correct driver.

It's a commom problem when you update OS's and jump 2 OS's.I have never experenced a noise from the DVD rom from a OS upgrade, but , If you had it upgraded I would take it back to the person that did the upgrade, apparently somthing was done wrong with both the machines. Have you done ALL the Windows Updates? Open Device Manager, DVD/CD rom drives, Open your DVD, Update driver.

SOURCE: will not start up - makes clicking noisee from near dvd draw.

Hi there.
The hard drive is on its way out and at some point its going to need replacing.
If the problem is intermittent and you can still get it to boot into windows i would suggest you back up all your data (pics, docs etc) to an external drive or to CD/DVD before you loose everything.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

As there are several versions of Windows 7, I recommend you go to the Sony eSupport website, where you can download the driver in the camera section.

When selecting your Windows 7 version, do indicate if it is a 32-bit or a 64-bit installation. To get tgis information, on your desktop right-click on My Computer and click on Properties.

Link to Sony eSupport download page is :

Hope this helps you.

Cant connect to wireless on dell laptop xps M170

First of all make sure that there is a wireles adapter on your laptop.
There are some XPS M170 Models without one.
If you have one, we can try to solve the problem?
1. Make sure that the driver of the Wifi adapter and the Chipset are propertly installed. Try to download the newest driver from the dell web site accordng your os
2. If there is a third party conection software like Conection manager or else, deinstall it an let windows manage your networks
Hope this helps you. I will need a screenshot and some further descriptions in order to solve the problem if the 2 solutions above dont help.
