Question about DVD & Blu-Ray Players

9 Answers

Trying to play a movie with cyberlink power dvd 8 and the movie plays fine up till the 13 chapter..then freezes. No scratches, brand new dvd. It will play any chapter up to the 13th, but nothing beyond that , up to the 21st chapter?? When it freezes and I turn on the monitor thing, it is only using 0-2% of the CPU. The light on the dvd door on my pc flashes and you can here it searching back and forth for data...so I end up shutting it down and trying over again...same thing. Any ideas...other movies play fine on my computers dvd player.. could it be that the movie is too large..5.96gB? thanks,Dennis in Australia

How can it be the disc if it has no scratches and played perfectly up to the middle of the movie? I don't understand..

I originally tried it on my LG stand alone player with the tv... but it froze on that straight away, so I used the pc which has 2 gb of ram and is a dual core 3.3mhz. The disc is made in widescreen format...but as I said it played for 42 minutes and then freezes anywhere you try it after that...but will play again and again before 42 minutes?
Does it sound like the disc?

I cleaned the head with a Phillips head cleaner cd..still the same problems. I have sent the disc back at my own cost to the maker in the States(I am in Oz) They are sending me a new one they have tested right through on a Sony dvd player. My players were both LG and both would freeze up?

  • If the DVD only freezes for a small amount of time somewhere in the middle of the movie, you likely have a double-layered DVD. Many DVDs with movies over 2 hours in length are double-layered to get more information on one disc. The pause in the picture is when the DVD player is switching from one layer to the next. There is no problem with your DVD player or the DVD.
  • Do not try to take the DVD player apart to clean it, or you could void your warranty.

See if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
Does the player make squealing noises after it plays for a long time or is it totally quiet? Squealing noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.
Totally silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

You could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust accumulating, but its still worth the try.
It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track

What about other movies. If they play OK it might be softwear or hardware problem. There are several ways to check
1. Use CD/DVD lens cleaning disk ( available in **** Smith Electronics). My Philips DVD drive always got stuck in the middle of DVD it was gone after I used the cleaning disk
2. Second way to check if you copy whole movie to your PC and check if it plays. But it might be impossible as most of DVD ar copy protected.
3,. Use anothe softwear.

If you dont have problem with other disc ,and you have problem with new disc getting freeze then its problem with disc as the part from 13 is not written on the disc properly which get it freezed and it wont respond as the player is not able to encode it properly... If can try with other software like VLC player plays the movie on computer VLC player is freeware player...

Good luck...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand a mechanical problem. The carriage (where the laser optics ride) could not traverse its route. Most likely dried up lubricant on the slider bar. This would be the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grime, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track.

My dvd player freezes when I view rental/bought movies

Is the player new? If it's a new DVD player and still under warranty, I would return it, exchange it or possibly, consider changing brands: perhaps to a Phillips brand DVD player. After all, the Phillips corporation guarantees its DVD players will play everything, just read the box in which the player's packaged - it's the best bang for your buck. With DVD players being so inexpensive these days, the best option is to buy new. Keep computing Chomskyites.

Player suddenly freezes

Try running a dvd cleaner through it first, before trying anything else (the type that looks like a DVD with a brush underneath).

The regular DVD might have been a fluke (scratches, rental?, burned dvd?)

Was there anything special about the new Blu-Ray Disc - what was the tile? On certain titles, you may need the firmware upgrade found at:

Playing recordable dvd

My Emerson won't play anything except DVD Movies, never has, wasn't suppose too. Make your movies in DVD Video format and it will read them fine (unless it's broke). I make movies all the time and play them back in mine. It reads DVD-R, DVD+R, and in duel layered. It will not read RW disks!

Man I've every problem you can imagine with DVD Players. I've found when the disk gets stuck, as long as it's not jammed. You can turn the unit off or unplug it. Plug it back in but DON'T TURN IT ON! Instead hit the eject button and the drive should open the drive without trying to read the disk.

New Player freezes up on or after track 12

this is the same response to another post
the unit i purchased ran great for about 2 months then the video started to freeze. power cycled solved the problem initially, but when power cycling did not cure the problem, i started shaking and tapping the unit. at a point of throwing the unit away - took the cover off to see what's inside. with the cover off, it ran just fine . put the cover back, ran ok for a while then started freezing video again.
twisting the unit appears to make it function..
my solution that appears to work for my unit. .
loosen only the two back screws holding the plastic drive mechanism down to the bottom plate (chassis) assumption is that the metal chassis was twisting the drive mechanism and offsetting the photo pickup.
this has worked for the past 2 weeks without a problem.

DVD Freezes during playback

it might be that you are playing a dual layer dvd in the player. The player needs to focus on the second layer of the movie, and that might be why the dvd freezes. Leave it there for a while and the dvd should continue if it is this situation.

Movie Freezing

Sounds like youe unit is getting tired my freind. they dont make em like they used to. The unit most likly needs a tracking or focus servo alighnment, but to put it on a bench, and have a tech adjust the alighnments, will most likly exceed the cost of a new unit. The laser could also be getting weak, and the replacement optical assemblies for this unit alone cost about 60 bucks. Then you have labor and alighnment cost, as you don't just throw in an optical pickup assembly and it works. Good Luck Please, do not forget to rate this thread.
