The cartrages can be purchased from just about anywhere... I looked them up at www.tigerdirect.com and they go for about $25 for the black one and $13 for each color. You should be able to just buy the ones you need. Here are the part numbers for the cartridges:
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off.
I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with
the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the
printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.

Try unplugging the printer for about ten to fifteen seconds; then replug.
This may clear the printer's memory about the low magenta. I had a similar thing with yellow, and when I replugged it stopped complaining about the yellow and told me that my cyan was out, and magenta low. I replaced the cyan, and voila! I can print!
the brother printer is not a good brand i also have a brother mfc 3220cn and it gives the same problem, what you have to is unplug the machine and let it stand for about 2 days take out the cartridges and clean the printing with air replace back them and plug in.that should remedy your problem.i urge on you never to buy brother printers.if you buy them get a bottle of phensic along with it.good luck my brother*
