HP mini 1000 hard drive s.m.a.r.t. status BAD, can still back up the data?

I've got a HP mini 1000 netbook, the hard drive s.m.a.r.t. status became BAD, and can't boot from hard drive, I tried to connect an external DVD and boot from it with a Linux live disc, try to back up some import file, when I double click the hard drive icon after booting, I've got "Hard drive has the problem, examine", sometimes I can see one or two partitions and sometimes don't, the partitions I can see is not the one with the important data, Is there any way so I can back up the data. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all your quick replies, but unfortunately, it's a 1.8 inch hard drive, I don't have the adapter to connect it as an external drive, since the laptop (netbook) is old enough, I don't want to purchase another 1.8 inch IDE drive (maybe costs me more than 80 bucks), I would like to know if it is possible to back up the data, I tried windows PE disc, but can't see my local hard drives, linuxmint, I can see the partitions, but with errors,
    Thanks a lot again.

Try this -
Remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to the USB hard drive adapter then connect it to a working computer's USB port. This computer will see the USB hard drive adapter and hard drive as an external storage device, you can then open the folders and files on the hard drive and copy the data files to the computer and to backup your files. If it doesn't work then your luck has run out. There are companies that can recover data from faulty drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

SOURCE: Can my hard drive be salvaged?

You can definitely get another one, as long as it's compatible with your system...get the original specs from dell, then search online at western digital, tiger direct, etc. etc. Many online sites will have recommendations for your system.
Please consult links here and here
You may want to run chkdsk to see what's up with it...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

SOURCE: compaq evo n1020v not able to boot, no displal.

You have a sick laptop, could be simply a faulty power adapter to a faulty motherboard. The Evo is old and probably not worth fixing, better to put your money towards a new laptop.
There is a way to retrieve data from your hard drive provided it is not faulty.
Remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter. Insert the adapter into a working computer's USB port and the computer will see this as an external hard drive. You can then open the folders and view your files. Copy the various folders and files you require to a USB memory stick and/or burn these to a CD etc.
It pays to backup your data regurarly because if the hard disk fails and this can happen unexpectedly, you will lose your data.
If the hard drive is faulty, there are companies that can retrieve data from faulty hard drivers, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.

SOURCE: Hello, It seems I have to re format my HP 1000

You cannot use another laptop as an external drive.
I would not try a re-install just yet though. The bios will try to boot from your selected device and a failure to boot usually gives an error message of some sort. I would first try to get a boot CD/DVD that will let you boot up and check the hard drive for errors. If you have a bootable windows CD/DVD this may allow you to carry out diagnostics before you resort to full re-install.

Almost all of the HPs Mini laptop screen issues are related to the internal video card/motherboard. hopefully you still have the laptop under warranty.

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

Hi Brad i have a hp mini 1000 and its asking for insert boot media boot device

Your hard drive is either bad, lost the boot record, or the operating system is corrupt. You will need an external optical drive and a copy of the restore discs from HP to fix the system. First thing I would do is have this unit serviced to make sure that the hard drive is not bad.

My neo netbook has wheezing soung is this the hard disk? what should i do?

Could be. Could also be the fan. If you want to know for sure, put a sock on the tip of a small hand-held. vacuum cleaner and gently put it against the fan's output slot while the computer is off and not plugged-in. If you turn it back on and still hear the noise after cleaning the fan, the chances of it being the hard drive are higher. Depending on the age, you should decide whether or not to get it checked out. I would if it were older, and I would also back-up my data.

Why can't i format the hard drive on a hp mini book 1000

try a utility called "FDisk" Youll need an external drive,,only certain netbooks give you the option to format or restore to factory settings, this model has many different versions and only some of them offer factory restoration/formatting.
Good Luck

A disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart hp mini 110

If you can get it to boot to safe mode (f8), go to C/properties/ schedule a disk check and see if that repairs the problem.
If that does not work, there is a possibility that the hard drive is failing. This will mean having the laptop taken apart to check and replace the hard drive. You will then need an external Cdrom drive to reinstall Windows on the new drive. Or use a USB stick to install (difficult).

If you DO get the netbook to boot under safe mode, check the hard drive using this tool:

If the scan shows that the RSC is failing ( areas shown in red or yellow) or the main scan shows bad sectors, get your data off as quickly as possible as the drive will fail soon.

You can also boot into the bios (I think its f12) and check SMART technology tab, this will alert you if the drive is failing
