SOURCE: sewng machine motor housing

Remove the big plastic cover piece on the bottom of the machine with the single screw in the center.

Remove the machine's end panel by removing the single silver screw from underneath the bottom middle of the side panel. Pull the bottom of the side panel out and down to remove it. It comes off easily.

Remove the two screws under the motor assembly (silver screws with black washers).

Swivel the motor assembly enough to remove the belt.
There is a another plastic panel on the motor assembly over the motor itself. Remove the two phillips head screws to remove this panel.

At this point you can see the commutator and inspect the "business" ends of the brushes. (In our case, one brush was almost gone and there was nothing left of the second brush except the spring!)

You can then slide the motor out of the housing. I pushed on the motor pulley and pulled on the other end of the motor with pliers. The motor comes out rather easily, but be careful not to disturb the wires any more than necessary.

With the motor exposed, unscrew the caps over the brushes and remove the brushes.

Our motor's commutator looks significantly worn and the motor may need to be replaced. If you find a source for the brushes or a replacment motor, please let me know! Thanks, John

SOURCE: old bernina 830 stitching problem: tight

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.

SOURCE: I have bernina sport 801 machine and need to know

You can oil any two metal parts that move togeather or through each other. Do not oil bearings and do not oil gears. Do not use 3 in 1 oil or WD-40. Use regular sewing machine oil.
801's were made from 1979 - 1982. The way Bernina dated these on the machine is by the serial number. Your number would probably start with a 0 or a 1. 1970 is a 0, 1971 is 01, 1980 is 1, 1981 is 11, 1990 is 2, 1991 is 21 etc. etc.

My Bernina 530 is not stitching as nicely as it has been even with the walking foot. Had 3 months and have had super results until today. New needle, rethreaded, re did bobbin, cleaned all lint away

It is the older mechanical Bernina 530 Record or the newer computerized Bernina 530?

The mechanical model may need a thorough clean and oil.

Without knowing exactly what symptoms the machine is exhibiting, we are limited in our ability to assist.

I removed the old light bulb and now trying to replace it on bernina 930. the bulb is the right one but it won't go in

Ah-ha--have had the same problem. When you remove the old bulb, there is a black flipper inside that is spring-loaded and closes. You have to hold that flipper open in order to push the new bulb into place.

I have bernina 530-2 record and cant get it to start. nothing happens when I lift the knee control. Does this mean it needs a new motor?

Some of these old machines have carbon brushes in them. When it gets worn down from use and eventually fails to make contact, it will no longer work. The replacement carbon brush is relatively inexpensive ~$15.

Broken spindle on bernina can it be replaced model 135 it is broken in 1/2 and is plastic,

I know this is an old question, but for anyone looking for an answer to this, the spindle on this machine can be replaced, and it is a fairly cheap replacement. It must be ordered from a BERNINA dealer. You can find a local dealer by using the locater at the attached link.

How to oil? Where do you put oil?

The Activa range came with a lightweight plastic hook/shuttle that Bernina claims does not require oiling. Oiling/greasing of the main drive mechanism should only be done by a competent Bernina service engineer - it's not like the 'old' Berninas that had red paint spots next to all the oiling points ! I, however, always recommend that the hook/shuttle is removed every 3-5 bobbins-worth of thread and the hook race is thoroughly cleaned with a cotton-bud. Although Bernina says it doesn't need oil, I find that a small drop of oil on the hook race running surface is extremely beneficial to keeping the noise-level down and improving the consistency of the stitch formation.

I have just bought myself a very old unloved looking bernina record 530 for $5. Would love to clean it up and service it myself if u think this is possable...also it has knee control which is abit touch n...

Hi, I also have a 530 Record which has sewed an "illegal amount of km's!" Get a copy of the manual thru' the web, you won't find one for the 530 but the 530-2 & 532-2 manual will suit as they are very similar models. Make sure you oil it at designated places- too little AND too much both can give problems. Check condition of the belts. The machine should sew at a reasonable speed, if not or you think there's a problem with the knee-control, it could well be that the motor is on it's way out, (like mine). I'm trying to get mine rewired. Good luck & let us know how you go! Sam
