SOURCE: My Nordyne air handler has

Hi, there are a couple of things that will cause your air handler to ice up, some you may be able to take care of your self, and the last you will need to call out a service tech. First of all, you must have a clean filter at all times. 2nd, if the indoor coil has gotten dirty, this will cause decreased air flow across this coil and it will ice up very bad. Cleaning or I should say, getting to this coil to clean can be a job. You will have to bend the sheet metal panels, remove some screws, and work around the freon lines to get back to it enough to remove the sheet of dirt that is covering the coil. It will peel off like a sheet. When they get this way over the years, they will block the return air back through the coil, and it will ice up.Once it is cleaned, you may have to buy a roll of aluminum tape to seal the areas that didn't go back together very good. If your blower motor is not moving air very good, like it is ready to go out, moving slow, or making noise, this will do the same. The last thing that will cause this, is the unit has a small freon leak. If your air handler is gas, you can turn on the heat to melt the ice off faster, if not, turn just the fan on to melt the ice away. Once its gone and you have good air flow, turn the a/c back on and go to the outdoor unit. Place your hand above the fan guard to see if the air is good and warm to hot. Find the large copper line below and grab hold to make sure it is good and cold and is starting to condensate. The smaller line, discharge should be good and warm to hot. This will tell you the freon level is real close to being full, so your problem will more then likely be a dirty, plugged indoor coil. More then likely, this is your problem and would be something you could do your self to save you $$$$. I hope I have helped you on this and given you some direction to go on. I have done this for many years, and know the signs very well. Please don't forget to rate me as I know you will be kind. Please keep me posted on the outcome.
Sincerely,

They are expensive to buy, and to replace it as well. I would not to expensive. Any air handler, just not a variable speed.

Pa12NA048-d. How many tons is this unit? It's 7 years old and went out. Needs replacing.

Hi, the tonnage is a 4 ton unit. It says in the model number, the 048. There is 12,000 btu's per ton of cooling. So, on your unit 4x12=48= a 4 ton unit.

What tonnage are these units and is it a variable speed.

The heat pump model number shows that it is a two and a half ton unit. I am sorry but I am not familiar with the air handler model number.

System Malfunction, No communication with outside unit

I work on Carrier Infiity systems. The outside board has a Model plug on it. This tells the system what size unit it is. They do go bad. You can reset your self by turning the power off to the Air Handler. These system have 10 year warranty and if you still have a problem have the replace the outside control board and model plug. Also you can contact Carrier on the their website and get answers. You may need to talk to a service rep in your area. Carrier is good about their Tech support. You should have to pay for a service call if you your problem continues. Sometimes power surges or stoem cause these problems but not often Rusty

Have 9 yr old Carrier model 3BTRA-048 12 Seer AC. IT has stopped cooling / Called Co that installed it/ TEch came out and checked outside compressor, it was ok/checked inside coil it was freezing 1/2

I wouldn't be so fast to say that it isn't low on R22. What are the indoor and outdoor temps? If there was a restriction I would expect the high pressure to be higher. I would definitely get a second opinion. Some companies will give free second opinions. Don't tell the second company what the first co. diagnosed until after they diagnose it. Just tell them what the symptoms are.

Btu's

That air handler can accamodate different size coils. Look for the coil model number. Also you can look at the outdoor unit model number they should be matched up. There is generally a set of 2-3 numbers in the model numbers that will tell you. xxx036xxx is 36,000 btu. tonnage is 12,000 btu per ton so 36,000 btu's would be 3 tons. xxx040xxx= 40,000btu's or 3.5 tons etc.
