Mount the transformer on the generator. Hard wire it into a 120 vac plug. Run wires to the module and connect to the coil on the relay. Now run the load you want to disconnect while the generator is running to the load terminals of the relay in the module.
If the generator is installed correctly and it is running within it's continuous rated capacity, it can run indefinitely. The main thing is operating temperature. Just like a car engine, once it comes up to normal operating temperature it's cooling system should be able to keep it from overheating. But unlike a car, where the manufacturer has complete control over the installation, a standby generator could possibly be installed in a way that inhibits proper cooling. However, this is very unlikely if the unit was professionally installed. And even if it did overheat, the unit should be able to trip it's own breakers or shut itself down anyway.
The only other consideration is fuel consumption. A standby generator is not an economical way to get your electricity. If it runs for several days or weeks you are going to notice the fuel bill.

overload function. same as a trip fuse. Possible fault in A/C or you are trying to exceed the generators capacity. A./C;s draw a lot of amps and can often cause lots of drag on a generator when other items are on too even just lit up in standby mode ( m.waves.. Tv Electric stove etc)
If the starter battery is not taking a charge, then it may have failed and require replacement. It is not uncommon for a battery that sits on standby for long periods of time to eventual fail. Best approach is to contact Kohler direct or one of their service agencies to get the correct replacement battery for the generator system.
