Is the fuse inside the control board because I don't see it. This is the board type that is in the heater: 50E47-140

  • Robert Dec 11, 2012

Yes the fuse looks like aautomotive tupe fuse which is 3-5 amps. It is possible the thermostat is bad since it sparked. You can takenthencover off the thermostat and take the red, white and green wire jump them togethur and see if the furnace starts.

  • Bertha Martin Dec 14, 2012

Haven't had a chance to do what you suggested but will do it on the weekend

  • Bertha Martin Dec 15, 2012

we turned off the gas on the heater, do you know if when we try to jump start the thermostat if the pilot will also turn on?

  • Robert Dec 15, 2012

Is this a direct spark ignition or spark to pilot ignition system?

  • Bertha Martin Dec 15, 2012

I don't know which one it is. We did try the jump start on the thermostat and the pilot does come on but the furnace won't turn on.

  • Robert Dec 15, 2012

Can you take a pic of the pilot assembly, it is crucial to know what type it is because they operate a bit differant.

  • Robert Dec 15, 2012

It is possible the ignition module is defective, if the ignition assembly is not sparking. If it is sparking then the ignition assembly could be defective

  • Bertha Martin Dec 15, 2012

I attached a picture, I hope I took a picture of the correct area.

  • Robert Dec 15, 2012

This is the gas valve, do you see a control board onthe furnace where a bunch of wires attach to?

  • Bertha Martin Dec 15, 2012

Is this the correct one? The board type number is: 50E47-140

  • Robert Dec 15, 2012

Yes that is the one thank you. Donthe burners light at all?

  • Bertha Martin Dec 15, 2012

    No they don't.

  • Robert Dec 15, 2012

Ok sounds like you will need a new ignition module. If the module was not fused, the spark probably damaged the module

  • Bertha Martin Dec 15, 2012

Ok thank you so much for your help

  • Bertha Martin Dec 15, 2012

    Is the module the box?

  • Robert Dec 15, 2012

No problem. Yes it is the box where all the wires attach

  • Bertha Martin Dec 16, 2012

Does it make any difference if I get a box with the same model number but with the letter "D" instead of "E"?

  • Robert Dec 16, 2012

No, the only differance it that the D is a universal model

  • Bertha Martin Dec 22, 2012

I replaced the module but the burners still don't light up.

  • Robert Dec 22, 2012

You will need a multimeter to check for voltage at the gas valve. There should be 24 volts

  • RJ Systems (Retired) Dec 17, 2013

The older mercury thermostats always spark inside the bulb when opening the circuit, or to say, when the heat turns off. Replacing the hi limit switch on the heat exchanger should not affect that. Can you give us pictures of the stat and limit?

Tip

When the furnace blower runs all the time.

Usually when the furnace blower motor runs all the time
The limit switch or rollout switch is usually open or bad.
The furnace board is seeing that one of those switches is open, so it brings the blower on to try to get the heat out of the combustion chamber area, so the switch will close. But if the switch is bad and won’t close, the furnace board will keep the blower running continuously.
Make sure the fan switch on the thermostat is not in the "ON" position it should be in the "AUTO" position.

I have JANITROL GAS FURNACE that the MAIN LIMIT

First, replace the limit. What causes a furnace to cycle frequently would be either a malfunctioning thermostat, a shorted thermostat wire, a bad control or the thermostats heat anticipator is not set right.
