if your computer came with a motherboard disc the sound drivers could be on it click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to sound video and game controllers you might see a yellow question exclamation mark? ! or a red X Right click to reinstall drivers if you need more help with this post a reply hope this helps
How old is your monitor? If it's an LCD type with 5 to 9 years of age then it may have burned out lighting inside of it. You would just replace the monitor. Check the back of the monitor for the date. If 2004 or earlier then you need a new monitor. You did say the video comes up to desktop, so it's not the video card, and the pc booted up so it's not the cpu either. I've had this problem too.
