Question about Kenmore Elite 5-quart Stand Mixer

Open Question

High pitch sound, runs slow, doesn't mix the greatest.

When using my Kenmore Elite 5 Qt. 400 watt, it starts out fine. The lights come on, it starts mixing and everything seems fine...then it starts making a high pitched sound and sounds like it going to blow up. I just got it last year for Christmas (2011) and have used it maybe 10 times, if that. My husband and I just had a child so I haven't done much cooking lately but i was planning on it for the holidays...my mixer is not sounding the greatest though. It makes a horrible sound like the gears are beginning to strip or something...I'm not really sure. When I've been using it, if it starts to make the sound, I hit the top of it to stop the sound...sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. I'm not sure what else to do. Please advise on what I need to do to fix this!!

Motor not spinning in hobart 60 qt mixer

Check manually after disconnecting the motor if this is jammed. If so the motor must be reset as the bearings are faulty and so the rotor seems to get stuck with the coil core.
Also if there is high drain with heat it is possible that the coils are faulty and might need an insulation failure test.

I have a Kitchen Aid k45ss that was dropped a few years ago. I works fine but the speed switch doesn't want to stay in the off position so we have to unplug it. I opened the unit and the switch...

When you said "the speed switch doesn't want to stay in the off position", you meant to
say "the speed switch in the OFF position does not turn OFF the mixer", or "the speed
switch physically cannot be moved to the OFF position"?

In any case, try to adjust the mixer speeds.
Obtain a copy of the K45SS Repair Part List from Kitchenaid.com.
Remove the screw holding the End Cover and locate the three screws from the Control Plate.
All three (2 top left and right, and 1 bottom) must be adjusted.

1. Loosen the lock nuts enough & Turn the 2 top screws clockwise until they cannot be turned
anymore. Leave the bottom screw alone for now.
2. Use a dab of white paint or paper whiteout to mark the positions of the Phillips screws.
3. Plug in your mixer and Set the speed selector to "Stir".
4. Turn each top screw One full turn couterclockwise (alternating between Left and Right)
Keep making one full turn at the time (for both left and right) until the motor starts running.
5. Put your hand near the Agitator shaft and allow it to brush your finger slightly. Use your
watch or clock and start counting the number of times the shaft touches your finger in
60 seconds. The correct count should be 60 RPM (Rounds Per Minute). If it is less
or more than 60, give each screw 1/4 turn counterclockwise or clockwise and start counting
again. Now tighten both lock nuts.
6. Set the speed selector to "6" and turn the bottom screw either clockwise or counterclockwise
to achieve a speed of 180 RPM.

For your reference, the planetary RPM's for the 5-qt. tilt-head Artisan Stand Mixer are as follows:
Stir speed - 60
Speed 2 - 95
Speed 4 - 135
Speed 6 - 180
Speed 8 - 225
Speed 10 - 280

The KSM90 is very similar to the 5-qt. tilt-head Artisan Stand Mixer.

My Kitchen Aid Pro5 squeals when it's running. I may have overheated it when mixing bread dough. It seems to be running okay. It just makes a very high-pitched noise now. What can I do to fix this?

Get a Copy of the Repair Part List of your model from Kitchenaid.com.
Most likely it is the Worm Gear (17) grinding at low speed the Worm Gear Follower.(19)
You don't have to replace it now, but it is best to open the Transmission Housing and
inspect all the gears conditions. Clear all the grease to expose them. The Bevel
Gear (21) sits right on top of the Worm Gear Follower. (See Repair Part List)
If its teeth look sharp and all metal shiny, then that is the source of your noises.
Eventually, all the teeth will be chewed away and the planetary assembly will stop turning.

Mixer whine

Unfortunately, the Kenmore mixer sounds louder than freight train due to a poor planetary gear design. I had to take mine back so that the neighbors wouldn't **** me. I hooked up two identical models at the store to get the same, painfully loud, experience. I think I prefer the sound of a bandsaw to the grating noise it produced.
