Question about Jeep 2002 Liberty SPORT

Open Question

My 2002 jeep liberty sport makes a grinding sound everytime I engage the 4wd parttime and fulltime

Every time I try to engage my 4wd into part time or fulltime I pull the lever back into the appropriate position, and after 1 to 2 mins it starts making a loud grinding noise, so I immediately disengage it....please help? Also every time I fill it with gas, no matter whether it is empty or half full, it stalls multiple times before it will finally turn over, and then runs badly until I shut it off and restart it, then it runs fine?

SOURCE: when in 4wd it makes a noise

Is the noise in the front or middle? If it's in the front, it is most probably a wheel hub or differential case bearing. First I would check (or replace) all the gear lube in the transfer case and both differentials.
If the sound is under the middle of the jeep, it's probably a front output bearing in the transfer case.

SOURCE: 2005 Jeep Liberty stuck in Part Time 4wd

I questioned the dealer about my 2005 because mine was disengaging what I thought to be rough compared to what I was used to. They told me that I should shift the vehicle into Neutral before shifting the selector. I have also found that shifting between Reverse and Drive a couple of times while stopped has helped as well. By doing these couple of things, I have had no trouble since. I hope this helps as it might at least be something to try.

SOURCE: 2002 jeep liberty Turn key switch makes loud

See that? Every once in a while I'm right!!! Reason is that the starter draws far more than anything else in the car. Lights and radio can easily be run by an otherwise ineffective battery, but when loaded (starter draws a bit less than 200amps), the battery will fall flat on its' face! When you jump it, the car is running off the alternator and seems to be OK, till you turn it off again.

Hello, I see your post is a few months old. If you still need help or a solution for this problem please feel free to contact me at rcruz@radiomedics.com

The loss of power to the unit should not have affected the CD player. It will re-sync upon powering back on but that is normal.

the check engine light is on (oBD2 check light?)

we cant do noise here.
deaf
but you can find the location, nothing else matters, the spot that makes noise.

what did you do, did you select 4wd or what?

The Liberty is available with either a part-time Command-Trac or full-time Selec-Trac transfer case.

if yes, which system do you have, we cant guess any of this.

When I take my liberty out of 4 wheel drive, every once in a while I get a clunking noise in the rear end area

is this Parttime 4wd or Awd OR USING LOW RANGE OR LOCK.
we cant guess this.
parttime is not for dry roads, only ice or dirt.
so if using PT or lock, it will complain, and causes, damage.
read the operators guide yet?

these cars come with various, drive line options
state yours. for good answers.

Intermittent starting

Yes. When was the last time you had the starter changed? Has anyone crawled under the vehicle to check for a loose starter? If the starter does not engage it may be the starter solenoid ( the thing that drives the gears into contact before the starter actually turns ). This might not be ramming the gears together properly and that will cause the grinding noise, as well as an intermittent start.

Wont turn over makes a click sound

The click sound is the starter relay closing. The pinion gear of the new starter may be jammed; otherwise the starter would spin but not turn the engine over

You are wanting to build a "franken-jeep" and you are wanting somebody to tell you how to do it? I have 2 words for you... GOOD LUCK! You should probably try a Jeep forum someplace where they talk about doing stuff like that all the time.

Try taking the gauge cluster out and cleaning the connectors then apply some dielectric grease. this may help with the speedometer. to remove the gauge cluster, pop off the top vent cover (3 clips), then remove the knee guard under the steering wheel. After that you will see two screws holding down the bottom part of the gauge cluster and 2 more on the top. Hopes this helps!
