Loss of steering

Have the lower ball joints inspected, tie-rod ends & steering rack or pitman arm. Any alignment shop will give you a quote. These components can cause loss of control. Drive easy and get the car looked at soon.

Hi Lisa, I'm not certain, but it is possible that the power steering has a separate belt. If the fluid level has remained constant and there are no noticeable leakages, a broken belt is the most likely cause. Regards John

Check to see if the belt is still on or off. Power steering pump could lock up so that the motor would not be able to start.

Problem is most likely park shift interlock. This has to do with shifter. The vehicle don't know it is in park and will not allow shut off or key remove. Need to take vehicle to a repair shop and have fixed.

possibly check your steering components. a broken component would cause such sudden loss of control resulting in a spin out

Quite often that will happen when vehicle parked with wheels turned, and/or vehicle on a slope, so try to avoid that in future.If nothing else, when parked on a slope, stop, keep foot on brake pedal, apply parking brake, put transmission in neutral, then take foot off brake pedal and wait for parking brake to stop vehicle rolling, then shift it into park. When leaving, put foot on brake pedal, shift to drive or reverse whatever direction your going, then release parking brake. Sounds like a lot to remember but you won't have to pull hard on shifter as before, and it could save a lot of money on transmission repairs down the road. Always try to park with wheels straight as well.
Now, with that said, if you parked with wheels turned, try hard to turn steering wheel in same direction wheels are turning, just slightly, as you try to turn key. Sometimes a quick yank in that direction will do it. Also make sure shifter is all the way in park before you try it. If your on a slope try rocking vehicle slightly up slope as you push/pull shift lever in to park and try to turn key at same time. If no luck, try pushing brake pedal real hard and try to turn key. Let me know how it goes.

did you check power steering fluid level?

Make sure that the coupling shaft from the column to the rack is tight at both ends. There is a pinch bolt on the ends. If they are tight try holding the shaft while turning. You will probably feel the clunking noise. If so replace the shaft.

Sounds like you broke a tie rod end, or a steering linkage connection.

Do you see anything that connects to the wheels hanging down?
Open the hood, and look at where the steering column shaft goes down. Can you see it turn? (this will take to people to see)
If that shaft turns, where it connects to the wheels, look at the tie rod (the long rod that connects to both front wheels), do you see it move?
