Question about Radio Communications
This radio was given to me almost a year ago. It works OK, but not to it's full capacity. I've had it peaked and tuned. SWR is at 1.2 on ch. 1 and 1.4 on ch. 40. I had been noticing that trucks I was sitting next to could hear trucks that I couldn't. The trucks in question were well within range for me to hear, but I couldn't. Sometimes opening the gain and squelch all the way would allow me to hear them. A couple of weeks ago the back light on my meter went out (I know it's not needed, just wanted it.) Anyway, when I took it to a local CB shop, he checked the radio out for me. He said I'm only receiving about half of what I should. I'd like to fix it myself, just can't seem to find the information I need to get the job done.
Go towww.cbtricks .com and look up cobra 29 wx nw st everything you need to know is there. you would be better off taking it back to the tech and having him do the receive because you would need more meters than just the one one the front of the radio.

SOURCE: swr meter not moving.
If the radio is working don't worry about the meter unless you absolutely want it. These little meters are not very accurate or reliable. Get an external SWR meter to check the antenna.

Start with the antenna that you have hooked to it, is it grounded, is the coax in good shape, is the connector in good shape. stuff like that.

SOURCE: Cobra 29 SWR, cal meter
Rule of thumb is go by what the manual tells you. providing it is the manual that is for the radio.. that is why they make manuals for that particular radio a 1-1 to a 1-2 swr rating is really good providing you have no saturation on the internal filter. over saturation due to swr being set too high will eventually burn out the finals of a radio
i have delt with radio's for about 17 years now so i really suggest consult the users manual and always use only a authorized dealer for that particular radio just like my cobra 2000 i am not going to send it to a shop that just does radios i want a authorized cobra dealer ok i hope that this really helps ok please dont forget to give this solution a rate for me it helps me out so i can continue to help out others like yourself.

I have the same radio as well. If you are running a "stock factory mic".....do this:
VOLUME: set to your comfort
SQUELCH:all the way to the left (if you don't mind hearing everything other wise adjust to the right to illiminate noise)
DYNAMIKE:If you have a factory mic or "noise canceling mic", turn all the way to the right (unless it squeals and then turn the mic gain down slowly until the squealing stops)
RF GAIN:that is your "receive" and I always turn it all the way to the right to maximize reception! In my opinion, this is the dumbest knob ever made since why not hear as good as you can??? thats what the SQUELCH is for!
DELTA TUNE: IT IS "USELESS!!!
SWR CALIBRATE: don't ever trust it! ALWAYS USE A GOOD SWR METER "IN LINE"
Now as for the "SWITCHES"
The top left switch is the SWR and as I stated, do NOT trust it and leave it on "S/RF (TOP)
SWITCH TWO: If you have it on OFF, you may get allot of engine spark plug firing noise so I run mine in the "middle" (ANL)
THIRD SWITCH: CB
FOURTH SWITCH: Brightness is to your liking!
There ya go! You can always set the switches to your liking and comfort.
