I should probably explain this more. I plus the Maxtor in, it shows that the drive is not there. Before all of this happened, it was working fine. But maybe like two days before, I started getting errors saying that there was a disk write failure.

Then I plugged it in when I got back from school, and that's when it couldn't read it. I got into the drive once since then by accident. However, it showed that all of the files are gone.

The device manager thing was one of the first things I checked. And nothing works. Do you know if these are symptoms of hardware failure, or software failure?

I have the same problem, I can not get vista to reconise the device. I have tried to find a driver on the internet with no success.

What I'm thinking is that something happened that removed all information from the drive, including drivers. Would the portable drive need to have drivers on it in order for it to work. If so, how can I format the drive. Cause I do have the program called 'Recovered my Files', which brings up files from any formats that have occurred.

    Dear Sir/Mme!

When I plug my Maxtor to my lap top or desk top, the light does not flash and thus it does not work. Please, help me solve the problem.

I have the same problem more or less, the drive worked fine i then moved the drive and bumped it ever so slightly. I then unplugged it with out un-installing it the correct way. Now my pc will not recognize the drive, if i open admin. tools to disk management-it shows the drive with no drive letter and tells me it's unallocated. Seagate has told me it needs to be reformatted. I don't want to do this. I do know if the light stays steady and it does not make any noise while you can feel the disk spinning then hard ware failure is probably not it. I have read the light stays steady when you turn it on, this is good. Once the drive is inactive for a while the light will flash at a steady pace, the drive is in hibernation. Seagate has a utility for$129 (my wallet is crying) where they can scan your drive remotely. The scan will tell you if the data is recoverable. I have also heard that the one touch interface is the problem. The same person said they opened up the case on it ( which i have just done ) and hooked it to the pc internally and it works fine. (which i am about to try) i will share the 411

Try checking the device manager and seeing if there is a ext drive. I also have had the same problem and i have vista on that computer and it was fixed once i unstalled the driver and reinstalled it.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks

Could very well be hardware failure. The drive could be shot.. Is it a dual USB plug one for power and one for data? if so make sure the data one is not on a 1.1 usb port. my problem was vista in a way.

You have what is call a USB POWER Y ADAPTER: this is designed to provide extra current to your USB HDD drive from a second PC USB port. Plug the end with two USB connectors to your PC/LAPTOP and the single-ended plug to your drive.
Hope it helps! Let me know how you go.

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.
