Question about Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator

1 Answer

Error Upon installing batteries, the calculator is on but locked up (no buttons work and the readout does not change). A message at the top, within a black bar, shows "ER_throw" (without the parenthesis). The bottom line shows "MAIN", "RAD", and "AUTO". Only one button on the calculator appears to operate: pressing 2nd shows "2ND" in teh bottom line.

Press the button marked [2nd] to access additional functions marked on the body of the calculator. To get to the Memory Management of the calculator, you press [2nd] followed by number key [ (plus key) ] near which is marked on the body of calculator MEM.
Thus, after you press [2nd][ plus key] a screen displays showing you a selections of actions. One of them, the 7th in the list, is [7:Reset]. When you press number key 7 to Reset, the calculator will ask you what you want to Reset and gives you the choice of resetting [1:All RAM] or [2:Defaults].
By selecting all RAM you clear the RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY or RAM of all the user has put in it. So if you have a calculator that is clean of all junk that may be preventing it from working properly.
I cannot possibly give you all the information, that is why the calculator ships with a rather fat user's manual. It is the primary source of information for the correct use of the calculator. You are expected to consult it.

Disregard all I have said because I described the procedure for the TI83/84Plus family of calculators. Sorry I did not pay attention to the date (January 13, 2009).

My TI-84 Plus calculator won't work. It won't switch off by itself. When the batteries are reinserted, it says that all RAM has been cleared. When i press the 'ON' button again, the screen clears. but...

The Ram cleared message is normal after you change batteries. When you see this message you press the CLEAR button to erase it. You do not press the ON button again because the calculator is already ON. If you want to turn calculator OFF you press [2nd][ON] (OFF).

On certain calculators, pressing the ON button when calculator is already ON is interpreted as INTERRUPT the current command.

Reinstalling the OS fot the TI84Plus

How do I correct the Error Waiting...Please Install Calculator SoftwareNow message on my TI-83 Plus family or TI-84 Plus family calculator?

If an operating system (OS) update fails or is interrupted, the calculator will be in an inoperable state with the message Waiting...Please install calculator software now.The most common cause of a transfer being interrupted is updating the operating system on a calculator with low batteries. Users will need to use the TI Connectivity cable and the TI Connect to send the operating system to the calculator. Make sure to have the latest version of TI Connect installed on the computer.
In order to install the software please follow these steps:
1. Connect the TI Connectivity cable between the computer and the calculator.
2. Click on Start >> Programs >> TI Tools >> TI Connect >> TI OSDownloader
3. Follow the on-screen directions to reinstall the calculator's OS.
If the message "Error! Press any key to turn unit off. Then turn unit back on." appears on the graphing calculator, quickly, remove one battery from the calculator and reinstall it while the transfer is taking place.

The batteries were all just replace including the lithium and it won't work I don't have cables with it does it need a download.

Hello,
Usually, you should not change all batteries at one go.

It is likely that the calculator is ON, but the screen is too light to enable user to see anything. If that is the reason, you can darken the screen.
Press the [2nd] key and release it. Press and hold the UpArrow till screen darkens enough.

You can reistall the system (if needed) by connecting it to a working TI83Plus calculator. You need the calc-to-calc cable.

If that does not work, here is what the Texas Instruments Knowledge Base says about the calculator not turning on.

Without further delay, here it is from the horse's mouth (TI Knowledge base)

I hope it helps.

For the TI-83 Plus Family, TI-84 Plus Family:

Caution: The resets described in these troubleshooting steps will cause a loss of applications, programs and data. If at all possible please create a backup using TI Connect™ first.

TI-83 Calculator RAM cleared

Hello,
To clear the message press [CLEAR]
If calculator shows message after you turn it [ON], it may be due to drained backup battery. If you have to change it make sure you have main batteries in and in good state, and installed.

If calculator appears frozen, press [2nd] [QUIT] to interrupt what it is doing.

I see you do not have the latest ROM (OS). You should download the latest ROM (1.19) and install it.

Use the education.ti.com link to download the TIConnect software. Install it on your computer. Run the TIConnect software. Connect the calculator to a computer (USB cable or TISilverLink cable or TI Graphlink black cable). Press the ON button, do not worry if you do not see anything on screen (contrast may be too light).
In TIConnect main window, click the TI Device info button. The software will try to detect the calculator. If the answer is NOT FOUND on any of the ports, click the communication settings at the bottom of the window.
Select Device: enter you calculator model
Select Cable: SilverLink, USB,
Select port : USB1 or COMx
and click OK. The TI connect software will give you some messages if communications with calculator cannot be established.

If you establish communications with the calculator, press the Update button in TIConnect main window. Install OS directly to the calculator. You may update other installed applications.
If you cannot communicate with calculator with the computer try to update by cal-to-calc connection with a working calculator/

Hope it helps.

TI-83 Plus Silver Edition problem

These instructions are from education.ti.org, and worked for me.

1) Take out one of the AAA batteries
2) Hold down the CLEAR button
3) Put the AAA battery back in while still holding down the CLEAR button
4) Let go of the CLEAR button and turn the calculator ON
5) Press CLEAR to get rid of the error message.

Then you should be good! All the applications on my calculator were still intact, so despite the error message, the RAM was never actually cleared.

Hi,
If the calculator has locked up you should perform a reset.
  1. Press and hold the [C] (ON/OFF) key
  2. Press and hold the [LN] key (third key from the left on the top row).
  3. Release both keys simultaneously. T
  4. The calculator should display "0.00" (if the number of decimal places is set to two.)
If that does not bring it to life you should perform a full memory reset

  1. Press and hold the [C] (ON/OFF) key.
  2. Press and hold the first key from the left ( the Square root x key) and the first key from the right (the SIGMA+ key ) on the top row.
  3. Release all three keys at the same time.
  4. Calculator should display "ALL CLr".
  5. To clear the message press the [C] (ON/OFF).
  6. The calculator should display "0.00."
If the calculator does not respond as expected,
  • Remove the batteries, and
  • with a metallic coin (and what coin is not metallica) short-circuit the calculator's electrical terminals.
  • Maintain the coin for about ten seconds.
  • Replace the batteries (preferably fresh ones) respecting the diagram inside battery compartment.
  • The Calculator should display "ALL CLr".
  • To clear the message press the [C] (ON/OFF).
  • The calculator should display "0.00."
If the calculator does not respond to the foregoing procedures, remove the batteries and leave them out of the calculator for 24 to 48 hours to drain capacitors.

If it continues to malfunction, it will need to be repaired. One repair shop in Pennsylvania, USA has a website at http://www.fixthatcalc.com Here is the link . You should contact them.

Hope it helps.
Thank you for rating the solution.

Error message

I fixed this exact problem on my TI-5006 II calculator by simply replacing a "dead" battery. Three of the four battery's were good (after cleaning their terminals) but the fourth was completely bad (i.e. read "Replace" on my Battery Tester). Other problems probably can cause this exact same error message but this cure was simple and cheap. The problem first appeared after the calculator was dropped. A sudden shock (dropping it) can cause even a good battery to fail.
