That would be normal, as the variable speed fan comes on only when the computer is under load.

What is not normal is that the fan is not coming on when the computer overheats.Or that the fan is not cooling enough when computer is overheating.

Monitor computer temperature using a software, check if Fan is coming up when temperature gets critical.

If fan comes up but does not cool enough, then replace the fan, it is not efficient anymore because of a bad bearing or dust. ~Also ensure that fan is well mounted, if fan has poor contact with CPU surface , cooling will be poor.

If fan does not come up, and critical temp is not detected, then the sensor on motherboard is bad, this is very uncommon. When this happens the problem is usually related to system or power settiings , rather than overheating.

If fan does not come up and temp is critical, then fan is faulty, replace it.

There are also more than one fan on many laptops, check that one of the fans (CPU fan, video fan) is not completely ded, and therefore cause for the problem.

By using the software below you can also discover if the problem is really overheating. If temperature results within normal range, then usually it is not overheating. In that case test systtem and check power saving settings.

Here is the software to control your fan and temp state:

Download SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Download SpeedFan 4.38

Most likely an overheating issue. You would need to tear it down to the CPU exgaust port and fan to clean it properly.

Hello, i have a Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop which i bought in 2007. Recently i have started having problems with HD-Ready videos (720p). before when i use-to play 720p videos on my laptop it use to run...

As you say the laptop handles the video well in the beginning, then when it runs for a few minutes it has trouble rendering the video in sync with the audio.
The reason for this problem is that 720p videos need the Graphics card in the laptop to work hard, this process generates heat and this heat needs to be removed from the laptop or the whole system does what's known as throttle down.

It slows down to reduce the heat it produces, thus preventing damage to the system.

The solution to this problem is to clean as much dust out of the laptop computer as possible, use a vacuum cleaner. Turn the laptop off and remove the battery. Clean the vents, it is a good idea to raise the back underside of the laptop with a pencil or the like. Some-thing that will raise the laptop off the work surface without obstructing the vents on the underside of the laptop. By raising the laptop it will allow for greater airflow through the laptop, therefore reducing the operating temperature of the laptop therefore making it more efficient and responsive.

Your laptop shuts itself down, this confirms that it is overheating. It does this so it does not damage itself.
If it still overheats then you will need to contact a computer technician to give it a good through cleaning. To clean the dust between the heatsink fins. Possibly increase the fan speed or replace the fan.

Take care!

Gateway m675 fan runs almost constantly, and it's having an affect upon my hearing (due to an old injury). I've tried the simple things, like cleaning vents, or adding a laptop cooler/platform (on the...

I would suggest either taking the laptop in for service to have them remove the case an remove any dust build-up on the heat sinks.
If you're good with a screw-driver, you might try to do the cleaning yourself.
You can't really clean the air vents well without taking apart the laptop.

KEEPS GOIN OFF AFTER THE FAN MAKE NOISES, SHUTTS OFF VERY OFTEN AND GETS VERY HOT

Need the make & model & O.S. to help you. You can install this software any way to control the fan. Set the fan to always on and see if it cools down. If the fan is noisy it should be replaced and clean inside of laptop. Dust will clog fan and overheat laptop. Over heat causing the shut down condition. This is a great toll to keep Dell laptop's cool. Let me know if it works.

I have a Gateway M675 laptop. It starts up just fine until you add a second stick of menory in the second slot. It will start with one stick in either slot but when you fill both slots at comes on, the fan...

Its possible that your slot could be dirty, you can try re seating the stick and then cleaning it with a brush. If that don't work you can just run it with one stick, last resort is to replace the motherboard.

Satellite A305-S6883 freezing for no apparent reason

It's an overheating issue.

Sometimes you can fix it by updating the bios.

Make sure you do it while the laptop is really cooled off or else you could do serious damage.

You'll need to check Toshiba's support page for the latest bios for your model.

You should probably hook up a regular fan as well to keep the laptop cool for the time being.

If the bios upgrade doesn't work you'll need to open the laptop up, clean out the dust with some more air, and then I'd suggest cleaning / reapplying some Thermal compound to the Cpu and heat sink.

That should take care of the problem. If the fan still spins slow you might need to replace it.

M675 fan is overheating

Hello!
Have you tried a cooling pad? there are many usb or externally powered multi fanned pads/trays the P.c. can sit on, cool air is directed into the intake.
How are you using the Laptop? is it in a confined space? or on a warm surface? as you are well aware the slightest increase in core temperature will cause safety shut down.
I had a friend with the very same problem he was using his machine inside the case/bag (Silly Billy)
Hope this sorts it!
