It's probably _not_ the soundcard (chipset), but the teeny little
crummy speakers built into the T42. On a thin, light laptop the manufacturers have to make some compromises, and one of them is that they give you miniature speakers that aren't much good for music reproduction.

The fix: either uses earphones or plug in external speakers into
the earphone jack. You can get pretty good, pretty cheap external speakers that give you fine sound.

Looking for updated bios for this laptop. It has bios 576A1100 installed, looking for a newer bios to upgrade the processor to i7-640m

Bios upgrades, if available, are gotten from the manufacturer of the laptop. And remember that bios updates are fraught with all sorts of risks - nothing is guaranteed and so much can go wrong rendering your equipment useless!

Go to the attached link and look up the benchmark for the processor you have and what you want to upgrade to assuming that on your laptop you have a snap in and not soldered processor. PassMark Software CPU Benchmark Charts

There should be an appreciable, really significant difference in processor speed to even justify the danger of what you are contemplating, say at least twice what you have. And given the price of current high end i7 chips the transformation will not be cost effective. If you had a desk top, you could tweak your OS and throw in a super hot video card but you have a laptop with limited if any upgradability.

To get best quality sound you don't need software but a good audio output. The sound quality of digital audio files is excellent. your cheapest option might be a good Bluetooth speaker (30 USD), you need a USB Bluetooth card but they are dirt cheap. Most expensive option is to connect output to a stereo amplifier with professonal speakers. I have thissolution and sounds great.

Thinkpad t42 makes only system error sounds but don't play music. error message no sound devise installed.how do i fix

Right-click My Computer, choose Properties, Hardware, & then Device Manager. Scroll thru the list of devices until you find Sound Devices. Is anything listed in yellow or with a red "x" thru it? If it's labeled with yellow punctuation marks, then the driver is missing or needs to be updated\reinstalled. You can get the driver by going to IBM's website, answering their questions about your laptop and then download the driver for your laptop's sound device. After installing the driver you should restart your computer. If your sound icon has a red "x" thru it, then right-click on the icon and choose "Enable". If none of this is true for your laptop or fails to resolve the probelm, then you most likely have a burned out sound card; which is not really replaceable. More than likely, It would cost you more than it's worth to have it fixed. I hope this information helped you to resolve the issue. Please leave feedback and a vote\rating on the info I've given you. Thank you!

IBM T42 with no sound card

It should be part of the mainboard rather than a separate card. Try uninstalling the drivers, then reboot and see if it detects new hardware.

How far can it be upgraded,eg.ram,graphics,processor.etc

With a laptop computer, nearly everything is integrated onto the system board. This means there's very little you can do to upgrade the computer beyond adding additional RAM. You can also install a larger hard drive, but that's not really an upgrade. Replacing the processor wouldn't be worth the cost and effort as it wouldn't make a noticeable difference in your computer's operation.

The best thing to do if you are really unhappy with your current system's performance is to install as much RAM as it can take. Other than that, put your money into a replacement computer that already has the specs you're looking for.

Thinkpad T42 wireless card can't find drivers

Your problem could be :-
Downloaded the wrong driver
There are a number of different LAN devices & wireless cards etc used this model.
There are two stages in the installation process.

Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model laptop,
Use this link :-
http://www.ibm.com/products/finder/us/finders?pg=ddfinder&cm_re=other-_-suprcn-_-download

After you download the driver file, click on this file and it will unzip/expand the drivers and copies these files to the hard drive in c:drivers... take a note of the folder it has created to store the driver files and then go to this folder and run the SETUP file to install the driver.

Soundcard acer aspire 5630

Laptop speakers are usually **** so you could spend a lot of time and money on something that won't make a difference. Try plugging in external speakers to the headphone jack. If the sound is good don't bother looking for a fix.

CANNOT INSTALL GAMES LIKE CALL OF DUTY IN MY NEC VERSAPRO NX SERIES LAPTOP.

This is because a game like call of duty requires a video card and most laptops don't have a video card, it is just shared video. You'll need to upgrade your laptop to a model that has an nvidia or ati video card or save the high end games for a desktop that has a video card.

Thanks and please take a moment to give this solution a thumbs up rating.

Buying a laptop

Hello Let_g,

Everyone will have their preferences, so expect more than a few answers to this. Knowing more about yourself and your habits will help find the perfect machine for you.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is what your main uses are going to be. Try answering some of these questions:
Do you travel a lot, or will just tend to set yourself up in a few odd places?
Do you play a lot of PC games or movies?
Do you tend to beat up what you own, or are you cautious with your stuff?
Do you like a lot of bells and whistles, or do you prefer something straightforward and simple?
Do you have any particular vision problems?

That aside, my most general advice for anyone looking for a laptop is to simply be sure to get one with a graphics card in some form. Look for something that advertises Nvidia or ATI graphics, and avoid other stuff like "Intel graphics media accelerator", which isn't really a card at all. The reason I say that is that I often find that graphics ability is one of the biggest bottlenecks in a laptop that is not really upgradable in the future. If you get a laptop with a solid graphics card, then most of the other features you need or want should fall into place. At $700-900, you're at the perfect price point.

I can get you specific models with answers to the above questions (I'll check back later). Otherwise, I'm personally inclined to recommend either hp or dell machines, though neither are at the quality they were a couple years back.

I also recommend keeping an eye on sites like Dealhack or Dealigg to find good deals or coupons, and get the most bang for your buck.
