I've tried all the above for Windows XP settings and the camera still no longer works...unloaded and reloaded both Skype and the camera software. Got the updated driver too. It all started when I moved the camera to a different port. The blue light pops on for a split second when the computer boots, but then goes off. The icon is no longer on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.

I have microsoft lifecam 1.4 and it was working just fine until about 4-5 days ago. I tried following every step from your advice, I reinstalled it (without the camera being connected during installation), and it works ONLY with messenger. I uninstalled and re-installed Skype, but it doesn't seem to work with it. And finally, when I try to open it on its own, it keeps saying: "Initiallization error" and nothing happens.

How can it work with messenger though?

Try reinstalling using the info below.

Normal 0 Did you install the software with the camera connected to the computer? Disconnect the camera from the USB port and reinstall the software. When the program asks you to connect the camera, do so, and it should work. Hope this is of some help. Bud

Below is info for setting up Audio & Video to chat on line after you install , either Skype or a messenger program.

Web Camera’s have to be setup on the program they are to be used with. Just installing the camera on your computer does not set it up to broadcast on messengers or Skype.

Each program has Options that have to be setup in order for the Audio and Video to function properly.

A. Skype Setup:

After downloading and installing Skype set it up as follows:

  1. Go to TOOLS, then OPTIONS, and click on Audio Settings and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  2. Then click on the Video Settings.
  3. The camera if installed properly will come up and show a picture.
  4. Then on the bottom of the page click on Save.

The camera and audio should function properly. Your friends and Family will now see and talk to you.

B. Yahoo Setup:

After downloading and installing Yahoo Messenger set it up as follows:

  1. Go to Messenger at the top left and click on it.
  2. Next go down to Preferences and click on it.
  3. Next Calling and Devices on the right and set the Microphone and Speakers to the computer Audio Card.
  4. Next go to the Test Audio section and (in blue writing) click on “Open the call setup assistant” and follow the instructions on the left window.

C. Windows Live Messenger:

  1. After you start Windows Live Messenger, expand the view by clicking on the square on top left next to the red X.
  2. Then on the Windows Live messenger window on the right side, click on “ “Show Menus.” And then click on “Show the Menu Bar”.
  3. Next go to the Menu Bar on right side, click on “ “Action.”
  4. Go to “TOOLS” and click “Audio and Video Setting” and follow the instructions.
NOTE: You audio and video shoud work. Enjoy.

When done both the Audio and Video will function properly so you can chat and see family or friends you are connected to.
Hope this helps. Bud

I have it everything installed but the camera just freezes.

What operating system are you using, Windows 7?
Did yo install the correct driver for your operating system?
If you did the above and it still doesn't work, I would restore your system to an earlier date than when you installed the webcam, and try to install the drivers for it, and try to use it.
More drastically, if it still doesn't work, then I would try 'Recovery' console to make your computer have the original settings from the factory, automatically install all Windows updates, then install the camera and reboot, and see if it works then. However, the latter method will destroy all of your data, so back it up before you do that.

I noticed that there was an optimized for Windows Live Messenger software package downloadable from the above site.

I wish you luck on getting your Lifecam VX-3000 to work on your computer.

Better used the cd installer that comes with the camera make sure its compatible to your Operating System (Xp, Vista)..if this fails you have a problem with the camera...if you change the camera and still doesnt work..try to plug it in the usb at the back of your pc..maybe its just a power problem with the usb connection..hope this works! Initialization error

Test your webcam here by hitting "Allow" in top window and assessing your webcam in left hand panel.
If it works here, you know the hardware is OK. Now you have to configure it to any program you want to use it in
SkypeIf you have problems when you use your webcam device in Skype, you may have to configure the audio and video setting in Skype. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Skype.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Audio Settings.
  4. Select your LifeCam device as the default microphone. For example, select Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000.
  5. In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Video Settings.
  6. Select your LifeCam device as the default Webcam. For example, select Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Test LifeCam by making a Skype test call.

I just checked to verify that Microsoft does indeed offer a Vista compatible download for that cam. If you are serious about using the cam on the Vista machine, maybe you should try downloading the driver directly from Microsoft. It is entirely possible that the CD drive on your Vista machine is having problems reading the CD that came with the webcam and the download would be a direct install from the hard drive. Heck, it's worth a try, don't ya think.
