My father-in-law gave me his old laptop because my sister stole my laptop when she moved out. He doesn't remember the password because this computer was sitting dormant for a while. Is there any way to use it now or is it ready for the round file?
I had the same problem. If it is as soon as you turn the lap top on, than you will have to have the hard drive replaced :( thats the bad news, the good news is that if it powers up and asked for an administrater password, you can go on ebay and buy a disk to have that reset. or i took mine to a computer shop, just a little family owned store, they popped in a cd and cleared it and then i got to choose my own password! It only cost me 20$ to have it done. If you shop on ebay you will probably find a disk for about the same price, if not cheaper, i saw one just the other day! Foe now you can still access your laptop by letting it load up and when it pops up wanting the Adminastrater Password> Erace Administrator and type in Guest and you can access the guest account with out a password, you just may not be able to use all the functions. If you need any more assistance you can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org my name is Jessica, ill be glad to help you get this worked out, i know what a pain it is, i went crazy when it happened to me!!!

I imagine you have Windows XP. If so, try this: Start the computer in safe mode. Choose the Administrator account. If your computer is like 90% of the computers I've seen, no one has password-protected this account. Once in, go to the control panel and choose Users; From there, you can change your password to one you remember. Next time don't forget it.

Password Genius, to remove Windows password or add new account.
On the Thinkpad's, it's a fairly easy process to reset the passwords. Try the following steps and you should be able to access the computer...
1. Power off the lpatop.
2. Flip the laptop over and open the Memory cover. It should have the diagram of a Dimm on it.
3. Short-circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit.
4. Remove the jumper, or whatever you used to short the password pads and put the cover back on the bottom of the laptop.
5. Power on the laptop and you should be fine.
For the Windows password you will need to reformat your hard drive. If that would not be done or if there is another way of removing the password without removing and reinstalling the operating system or of using your laptop by working around, windows password does not make sense at all. Hope this helps. Thank you.
