Thank you - I would uninstall if I could get the computer to stay on. I am going to try to contact Trend Micro since this never happened until I installed it. There didn't seem to be any problems after the WinXP upgrade to service pack 2 so I'm assuming there must be a conflict. Unfortunately, I can't get it to load anything even in Safe Mode. Any other ideas that I can try?

You may need to uninstall your trend micro
then reinstall service pack 2
Did you format or did you just install service pack 2

if you start hitting f8 repeatedly and start your pc constantly hitting f8 it should take you to safemode.

If not you may have to format

    let me know

if you don't mind losing anything you can format

While tring to install my UM175 modem, I get a message that say OS not supported. What do I do?

The Verizon UM175 installation supports WinXP, WinVista, and Win7 (and you're certainly running one of these three), so the only possible problem you might be having is that you may be running Windows XP, but you're running a Service Pack level that is no longer supported. Most software packages require WinXP to have at least Service Pack 2 installed, and many installations are now requiring WinXP to have at a minimum Service Pack 3.

To determine what Service Pack you're running:
START > Control Panel > System > General (tab)

Microsoft offers "Service Packs", consisting of (free) packages of updates and bug fixes for its operating systems, which are released riddled with bugs, omissions and security holes.
To install the Windows XP service packs that may be needed to allow the Verizon UM175 modem-related software installation to proceed, visit Microsoft at:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322389

This Microsoft Knowledge Base article mentions Service Packs 1, 1a, 2, and 3, but there is also a 4th.
Windows Vista also has service packs (there are two). If you're running WinVista, the Verizon software may require both. For these Service Packs, visit Microsoft at:

Trend Micro 16 Internet security blocking access to Internet after on-line...

Recently there have been problems with systems running Trend Micro 16 Internet Security blocking access to the Internet after an on line update.

SO far the simplest resolution I have found for this issue is to disable the Trend Micro Firewall, and enable this Windows Firewall. This restores access to the Internet in the normal mode and has no effect on the Antivirus Component of the software suite.

Trend has published the following fixes, but as yet I have not had any success using them.

The only other successful resolution I have found is to uninstall and reinstall the Antivirus suite

What's the best internet security software

Hello,
As far as many Internet security programs are concerned they tell themselves to be the best. But according to many surveys, the results found are different. I am quoting the commulative data of many top surveys that I have found for you.
The top 5 internet security softwares in my opinion may be mentioned as under:
  1. Webroot Internet Security Essentials.
  2. Kaspersky Internet Security.
  3. Bit Defender Internet Security.
  4. Norton 360
  5. Norton Internet Security
You can also manually see other programs and rankings using the following links.
Although different surveys have different opinions, you can trust your own decisions and my recommendations.

Please feel free to write to me for any further assistance.

I am following up.

Regards.

Compaq Presario R3150US shuts down with IE7, cpu usage goes up

Have you inatalled the latest service pack before you upgraded to IE7?
If not, suggest you un-install IE7, install the service pack, reboot computer and then upgrade to IE7.
If IE7 causes you problems the revert back to IE6.
